I have a 1996 Passat TDI with the original Premium AM/FM cassete deck with CD changer control. Can I connect a VW Phatbox to this?

Yes I have the same setup. you just need the right cable that goes from the phatbox to the CD connection where your CD was plugged into.  The number on my cable is CAS-001-AU-15.
