I know it's still only a guess, but worthwhile pursuing trying to alter the HDD's firmware rev / Serial then may not need to break Phatnoise's security at all - perhaps if anyone has friend of a friend that works for a HDD company, they might have utilities to allow people to alter this data on the drive?

I thought about this also... Please take a look at my comments here

The question remains: what's exactly used for their tag-generation? If it's only ID/serial# that might be easier as when they also use the physical layout (CMS) information...
