hi guys, i'm new here but i've had the phatbox for over 4 yrs now in my 05 Jetta GLI. i went ahead and updated the dms and phatbox to version 7.02. update in windows went well using the dms tools. inserted dms in phatbox and it took at least 5 min before the device was accessible on my radio. i figured it was applying the fw update to the pb. i noticed the text to speech wasn't working but all the songs were playing. i can't get the darn thing detected in windows. i have had that problem once in the past where i unplug the unit from one of the usb ports and plug in another one and poof it starts working. but now i can't get it to read on this computer or on my laptop. any ideas guys on how i can get it to work? red light is on only on the cradle when the dms is inserted.

Sounds a bit odd, but it could be a problem with the cradle.
Definately make sure the power cable on the cradle is fully inserted as that can cause problems if it's a little bit loose. Also, when you insert the DMS check that the lights are being illuminated. Red = Power, Green = HDD access.
It's common for the switch inside the cradle to have issues (look inside and you'll see it near the DMS connector), and the switch is key to making everything work.

i just removed the dms hd and plugged it into an external enclosure. os picks it up no problem. i can see both partitions. should i defrag it? both partitions?
when i insert the dms in the cradle red light goes on only. yellow light does not. once in awhile the yellow light might flicker but os hasn't detected it yet.
if the switch in the cradle is the problem, what should i do to resolve it?

If I recall correctly, if the Red light is illuminated then the switch is okay so perhaps you have a problem with the board - and it might be time to look at Terry Kennedy's recent post about getting a replacement board.

can PMM tell the difference between a dms inserted in a cradle or the dms hd in an external enclosure?

It all depends on how the cradle reports the drive to windows, as PMM then uses a DLL to restrict which drives the software can see.
There's no such restrictions with PhatHack Media Manager though, as long as there is a PHTSYS and PHTDTA partition, PhatMM will correctly identify the drive as a DMS.

can PMM tell the difference between a dms inserted in a cradle or the dms hd in an external enclosure?
Yes. First, it checks that the drive is connected via one of the approved cradles: USB\VID_066F&PID_8000 (SigmaTel chipset) USB\VID_0424&PID_20CD (Standard Microsystems USB97C201 USB 2.0 cradle) USB\VID_04CE&PID_0002 (ScanLogic USBIDE SL11R ) USB\VID_05AB&PID_0031 (In-System Design [Cypress] ISD-200 USB 1 cradle) And then it separates the drives into three categories: Allowed: Toshiba MK6021GAS TOSHIBA MK6021GAS Toshiba MK6015MAP TOSHIBA MK6015MAP Toshiba MK4025GAS TOSHIBA MK4025GAS Toshiba MK4018GAS TOSHIBA MK4018GAS Toshiba MK4018GAP TOSHIBA MK4018GAP Toshiba MK3017GAP TOSHIBA MK3017GAP Toshiba MK2023GAS TOSHIBA MK2023GAS Toshiba MK2018GAS TOSHIBA MK2018GAS Toshiba MK2018GAP TOSHIBA MK2018GAP Toshiba MK1017GAP TOSHIBA MK1017GAP Fujitsu MHV2120AT FUJITSU MHV2120AT Fujitsu MHT2080AT FUJITSU MHT2080AT Fujitsu MHT2060AT FUJITSU MHT2060AT Fujitsu MHV2040AT FUJITSU MHV2040AT Fujitsu MHS2040AT FUJITSU MHS2040AT Fujitsu MHT2040AT FUJITSU MHT2040AT Fujitsu MHT2020AT FUJITSU MHT2020AT Fujitsu MHS2020AT FUJITSU MHS2020AT PhatNois e DMS PHATNOIS E DMS PHATNOISE DMS Blacklisted: eUSB Compact EPSON Canon USB Drive USB DRIVE Card Reader Maxtor LEXAR Storage HITACHI Generic SONY Sony SanDisk SAMSUNG Samsung Anything else: accepted, but not explicitly allowed.

forgot to ask, will dms tools see the hd in the enclosure in order to apply the hack to the phatbox? or would i need the cradle for that?

The DMS tools work as PhatHack Media Manager does, but you can't have both the DMS Tools and PhatHack Media Manager installed at the same time (at the moment). You'll need to un-install PhatHack MM if you have it running, and re-install the DMS tools to be sure the tools work correctly.

PhatNoise Media/Music Manager and the DMS tools can be installed side-by-side. PhatNoise Media/Music Manager and PhatHack Media Manager can be installed side-by-side. PhatHack Media Manager and the DMS tools CANNOT be installed side-by-side.

why can't i add songs to my playlist in PhatMM with the dms hd in the enclosure? it just opens up a blank window and gives you the option to add media but i can't add any songs.
also, i just hacked the phatbox successfully. everything seems to be fine, except the voices have changed. i don't think it's using the at&t voices. it doesn't seem to be able to pronounce as well. how can i get back to the at&t voices?

ok i got the cradle to work now. i rebooted with the dms in the cradle and it picked it up no problem on startup on 2 different machines. also, got the voice prompts to work now that the dms is working with the cradle. just rebuild dms database and fix voice prompts under hardware options.
