I was looking at the pictures taken of the internal PCB of our toy here and got to thinking, how hard would it be to add an optical or coxal digital output to the system?
anyone have any ideas?

I guess you mean the audio not the control wires, right? Anyway you would first need an A/D-converter for the signals because I doubt the current PCB contains one... So in this case it's not just a question of soldering a new output onto the board. Do have digital inputs in your head unit?
