I am new to this forum.  It is amazing.  I searched and  searched but would like to know where I can get basic information on a step by step approach to create a DMS for my phatbox. I have already ordered all the parts (thanks to the site).  Where is the latest hackCD information and how do I do it. I am somewhat computer novice as well. Have you guys broken the 127gb barrier, yet. Sorry for the noob question, but I did search the board.

did you try the advanced search?  putting 127gb into advanced search links to threads that talk about the replacement kernel that we published that works only on hacked drives to allow 160gb or larger disks...

We've replaced the hackCD with a new thread at the top of the DMS hacks forum that talks about windows scripts to build your DMS and hack the phatbox.  I believe that the steps listed in that thread are pretty self explanatory.. however if you have questions after reading the whole thread then feel free to post them.

Judb, I saw somewhere that at one point you disabled the part of the script that installs the >127gb linux update automatically.

Has this been reeneabled in the latest windows scripts, or do I still need to manually install the file that allows >127gb drives...

after following the latest patching process in the wiki...

you need to get the updated kernel files off download.phathack.com and swap it for the existing files on phtsys

linux and linux.sig are the files you'll be swapping out with the LBA-48 compatible kernel.

Ok, to clarify:

I see these on the DMS in phtsys:
linux 800kb  and  linux.sig 1kb

and at http://downloads.phathack.com/sbingner/
I see linux 800kb -- this is the LBA-48 compatible kernel, correct?
so I assume that replaces the file of the same size and name on the DMS(in phtsys)

but as for replacing linux.sig, I do not see that at http://downloads.phathack.com/sbingner/  or in any of the sibling directories.
where do I get the linux.sig file?  or is it autogenerated somehow, at first runtime maybe? sorry, don't know linux too well...

I do see, at http://downloads.phathack.com/sbingner/ several other files that have LBA-48, in their name:

We cannot generate sig files for the main files -- which is why we have to hack your box.  To use the -lba48 kernel you have to have your PhatBox hacked, at which point the contents of the .sig file no longer matters... so there are no sigfiles posted.

So,
to enable support for DMS disks, larger than 127GB
you can either ignore the linux.sig file, or remove it, if your box is hacked.

and you replace on the DMS in phtsys:
linux 800kb  and  linux.sig 1kb

with

I would leave the old one there.  I don't know if the system boots if the .sig file isn't there but it no longer cares if the contents are correct.Unknown

no, you need to use linux-lba48 if you want the lba48 support which is what is required for >127GB

Also, you can boot without the sig there ONLY if you used the very latest patcher... otherwise something has to be there but it doesn't really matter much what was in it.

I left the linux.sig on, and used the files from http://downloads.phathack.com/firmware/ for Audi(v7.02)


Saw one of you removed the 800kb linux file that was there in downloads- thanks, more obvious then...
I was thrown off because I'm surprised a compiled file can be compressed to ~300k from 817k (like the lba-48 ver.)
.bz2 just a better algorithm than zip?  I didn't think something like a kernel file contained enough repetition to compress it at that rate...

Hmm, this is a little confusing to someone else reading this thread...

to clarify, to enable support of disks over 127GB, (such as this seagate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148073
 $119 at the time) Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (Perpendicular Recording) ST9160821A 160GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM Model ST9160821A

you do the hack procedure, and new DMS build procedure as shown here (http://wiki.phathack.com/Windows_Hack_Procedure )

then, you unzip your car specific firmware onto your blank phtsys partition, on the new drive (from here: http://downloads.phathack.com/firmware/)

Then, look in phtsys directory on the new drive, for linux 800kb...

you want to replace this linux file(the kernel) with the Lba-48 version- which suports longer address length thus bigger drives....

You need to uncompress these files, using WinRar (http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm), and rename uncompressed 817kb file from linux-lba48 to linux, and then use it to replace the 800kb linux file on phytsys.

My process after that, was to reset the Phatbox(already hacked) by unplugging the cable from the head unit for 30 seconds, then plugging it in, puttng in the new DMS, turning on the headunit, selecting the phatbox, letting the box boot for 45 seconds(green led bilinking, red led on) (source changed to radio on headunit) and then the box shut off automatically.
After switching source back to headunit one more time, pahtbox came up fine and played music...

You last step could have been skipped. If you removed the "forceupdate" and "forcesettings" files from the new DMS and just popped it in then turned on the HU, it should have worked...
