How long to partition a new DMS
« on: September 23, 2007, 10:26:33 pm »
Hello,

I hacked my DMS for a Music Keg successfully.  Installed a Samsung 80GB HDD and moved onto creating a new DMS.  Selected the necessary firmware for my Kenwood HU and clicked the "creat new DMS" button.  I initially got an error message.  Here are the details of this message:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

The program is still partitioning the DMS.  Is there a problem due to this error?  If not how long should I expect this to take?

Yes the error will stall the program execution, and whilst there may be a scrollbar whizzing around saying your DMS is being formatted - it isn't really.

You can easily tell if your DMS is being formatted as the green light on the cradle will be pretty much constantly flashing.

Hi, I believe I have a related problem.

I successfully hacked my VW Phatbox and when I try to create a new DMS on a 160GB hard drive, I get an unhandled exception error as soon as I click the "Create New DMS" button the PhatHack DMS Tools.  The difference with my problem is that if I click "Continue" on the error dialogue box, I get stuck.  The PhatHack DMS Tools sees the hard drive, but I cannot select a firmware version and can't go anywhere after that.

bdjones72, did you get anywhere with this issue?

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Please send me the exception error.  I suspect though this is probably an issue resolved in version 2.6 of the tools which I aim to release over the next week or so.

Unfortunately I cannot ship out a new version because the site used to download the firmware files is currently out of action (uncannily at the same time as the PhatNoise site) and I need to generate a replacement for the file am.xml used to load all the different versions of the firmware.

I suspect your issue is related to the lack of availability of the firmware files, which I have fixed the underlying cause of the error.

But please, send me the error so that I can confirm this.

Thanks.

Hi VorTechS,
Forgive my lack of technical abiltiy!  I don't know how to send you the files so I will put them in this post.  I did some more fiddling around and it turns out that I get the same error with a 40GB hard drive.  Even with the Phatnoise cradle disconnected from my computer, I get the same error.

Here is the error message:

See the end of this message for details on invoking

As I thought:

Code: [Select]
************** Exception Text **************
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
   at StandAloneDMSHackWizard.frmStartupWizard.PopulateFirmwareCombo

This is where the firmware dropdown is being populated, which uses the same firmware files that PhatNoise Media Manager uses (ie files from the PhatNoise backend sites).

Unfortunately PhatNoise still seems to be down, and so in the meantime I am trying to find a copy of the core firmware listing 'am.xml' in order to hack it around and use the PhatHack site as a backup for when PhatNoise is down.  That's assuming it ever comes back up again.  Because of other things I am working on at the moment I can't release a new version which actually prevents this error, but both the error and the backup URL will be addressed in the next version of the tools.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Thanks VorTechS.  I tried the new tools and now I get a different problem.  Actually, it seems to be the same thing that bdjones72 encountered.  I select the firmware 7.02 for VW and as I press the "Create New DMS" button with the cogs, I get an unhandled exception error like this:

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

After clicking "Continue", it says its partitioning but no green light flashing on the cradle and the tools application locks up.

Oh, that's not good.  I'll just drop this into a VM and see if I can work out exactly what's up with the application 'configuration'.   Never a problem I've come up against before, so I guess it's something to do with the build configurations.  I do recall switching one DLL to debug instead of release but really this shouldn't have made an impact.

Hey VorTechS,
I tried the new tools.  Thanks.

Everything appeared to complete normally until I tried to use it.  It would just lock up PMM and so I checked the log file and seems like there was a problem.  I tried it again and got the same problem.  Here is the log:

Okay, I need to modify the log files I think, then I would have the answer to the following question...

Can you tell me which version of firmware you chose?

Never mind, we tried to work it out from the HTTP logs, and see that you later went on to grab the VW native files.
As a result, I decided to hand test every single version of the firmware files and had mixed results.

Version 2.8 will resolve most issues however, the following Firmware versions cannot be installed:

BMW v6.0
BMW v5.0
Sony v3.00
Sony v2.00

This is because the following ZIP files appear to be corrupt once downloaded:

headunit_0x2200_6_00.zip
daemonfiles9_00.zip
headunit_0x2200_5_00.zip
daemonfiles_0x0606_3_00.zip
headunit_0x0606_3_00.zip
playerfiles_0x0606_3_00.zip
systemfiles_0x0606_3_00.zip
 headunit_0x0606_2_00.zip
systemfiles6_51.zip
daemonfiles6_51.zip
playerfiles6_51.zip

All of these are older versions of firmware anyway, so all recent versions of firmware appear to download and extract fine.

Try the new 2.8 tools, see if that gets you further!

I tried with 2.8 version and the same problem occurs with the firmware not being able to download.  I tried manually extracting the firmware, but that didn't do it.  I know there is more to it as per the documentation, but gave it a shot anyways.

okay, can we take this offline - I'll mail you a debug version with some more error messaging so we can get WHY it's failing to download.
