Help hacking Kenwood Music Keg
« on: November 14, 2007, 03:50:25 am »
Hello.  I have been trying to apply the hack to my keg without success.  The updates are being applied to my DMS cart, but it won't update the keg.  I have tried everything mentioned in this forum and the docs, including corrupting the ramdisk.sig file.  One time it started to play a track but no sound came out.  I though it was updating the keg, but it kept displaying 'eject' and then the track title over and over.  No log files were ever written to the cart during any of the dozen attempts to update the keg.  The keg works after I restore the original firmware files back to the cart.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Brian

Re-run the hack, also read the manual ;)

When running the hack on a music keg, whilst the hack is running what you've described is EXACTLY what should be happening.  If you leave the box long enough you'll notice that it reboots.  Oh wait, it did.  Your HU said 'EJECT', which means the box rebooted.

When it does this, simply switch the HU back to the Kenwood Keg.

I recently helped someone hack a 710, and noticed that the box rebooted 3 times.  After the 3rd time I got the 'Hack complete' message.  It may take more reboots.

If things still don't seem to be taking, disconnect the box from the Head Unit, wait for a minute or two, reconnect and repeat the process.

Thanks for the response.  I did do as suggested in the manual.  When my HU would display 'EJECT', it would never change the source.  I let it run for 15 minutes and it went throught that loop about 20 times.   I disconnected the HU and went through this process a couple of times with the same result.  It did not update any log files on the DMS during any of this.  Is there a way to tell if the hack worked without taking apart my cart and putting in a new drive?  Thanks.

Update:  I setup my 120GB drive and tested it in my keg.  It didn't work.  Put the old drive back in and it worked.

So your old drive is currently working.  Let's clear a few things up.

To start with you ran the Hack Tools v2.9 or above?
Tried to get the keg to update, but failed.
You restored the original firmware.

Have you re-run the Hack Tools v2.10 to re-apply the hack?
You now say your DMS is working... did you put on the original firmware again to do this?

Here's where to go from here.  Run the DMS Hack Tools to apply the hack to the DMS.
Once the hack is applied to the DMS - do nothing!
ZIP up PHTSYS and send me the files, I want to take a look at the state of the files once the hack is applied.

Insert the DMS into the PhatBox and attempt to run the hack.  When you get the 'Eject' message, switch back to the PhatBox.  Repeat 3 times.  If it goes to 'Eject' a fourth time stop running the hack, and stick the DMS back in the cradle.

The hack should apply the level 10 RC pair, which gives full logging - so we should be able to find out what's wrong from there.

Currently using version 2.10 of the hack tools.  I zipped up the phtsys directory.  Its 7MB.  How should I get it to you?  Also, when my HU displays "EJECT', it does not change sources, should I change to another source, then back to the keg?  THanks for you help.

Yes, change to another source then back to the PhatBox - sorry for not making that clear.

Okay, after trying for an hour this morning and another 30 minutes tonight, I cannot get it to go into the "loading.../Eject" loop.  i cannot even get it to show up in the source list.   I put the original firmware back onto the cart and am giving up for now.  I appreciate your help.

I just re-read your posts through, and something springs to mind.

You mentioned the words 'Keg' but not 'Disconnected from the HU' (although you do say you tried everything in the docs).

My Keg rarely runs the startup sequence, which is required for the hack to run.  The only way I found to get it to run was to unhook the Keg from the HU by disconnecting the changer cable, leaving it for a while and re-connecting it while the power is off.

I assume you tried that?

I left the cable unplugged for hours when I was trying to get it to work the other day.  I remember having a lot of difficulty trying to update the firmware in the past.  Is there anything else I can do to get it to run the statup sequence?  Thanks.

Okay, I gave it one more try today.  I had left the keg unplugged since my last attempt. Once I reattached it and turned on the HU it worked on the first try!  It even played the phathack mp3 file.  I checked the logs and it looks like it patched correctly.  I am going to test with a new drive tonight.  Thanks for all your help.  I really appreciate it.
One more item, can you tell me how to get the AAC plugin working on keg?  Thanks.
