Hi,

Had a 10 Gb DMS with the UK Kenwood 710, however the drive gave up the ghost from the use I got out of it.  Coincidentally an old hard disk drive MP3 player of mine also gave up the ghost, so I remove the 20 Gb hard disk from it and inserted it into my DMS and managed to setup PHTSYS and PHTDTA, then I installed the firmware using music manager.  Of course having read your site I realize that it does not have the appropriate signature on it.  I can see you basically answer this question repeatedly in the forums but I'm a little new to this sort of stuff and need walking through it.  How do I get a signature for the rebuilt DMS?

Basically you can't.

You will need to get hold of another original DMS (this will have a real "signature" on it), then use that to hack your Phatbox, then you will be free to use any hard disk that you like.

Hacking the box is harmless and means you won't depend on a working original DMS in future. Everyone should do it!

Some people on here will lend you an original DMS if you pay postage both ways. Let us know the area where you live and someone nearby may offer to help out.

I live near High Wycombe and if anyone can help send me a personal message and I can give you my full address.  I'd be most grateful to anyone who can help me.

If you are willing to send me your 710, and cover the return postage I can get it hacked for you.

VorTechS,

I've sent the DMS to you and Paypal'ed you the return postage.

Hacking the DMS means that when I put it in the 710 it reprogrammes it not to look for a signature at all so if I changed the HDD again I wouldn't need to re-hack it.  Is that right or would I need to hack the new drive from the one you're about to hack?

Also will I need to do anything to the DMS when you send it back or do I just put it in the 710 (nothing like resetting the head unit or disconnecting and reconnecting the 710)

Finally, once done should I avoid firmware updates or should I just update them as usual?

Stu, thanks for your help on all this I love the Music Keg and I really appreciate your help getting it fixed again.

You were meant to send the Kenwood Keg! ;)

Send that over, and I'll hack the box for you using my working DMS!

I'll then send both your Keg and your DMS back to you!
When it's done, you can then replace the disk in the DMS with a suitable one (5400 RPM 2.5" IDE/PATA disk)...and prepare it with the DMS Tools.
