Newbie needs quick advice
« on: September 09, 2008, 06:01:16 pm »
I have downloaded PhatHack DMS Tools, read the documentation, and searched the forum and read some great stuff!  :)

I have two VWs with Phatboxes. One DMS is dead. hard drive is toast.

From what I gather I need to...

1. Hack the Phatbox with the good DMS
2. Make a new DMS by installing a new hard drive and using PhatHack DMS tools
3. Put music on and off we go!

Questions...

1. Any suggestions on a particular hard drive (brand/type)? I don't need a large one. I only use 8 gig as it is. Just been thinking of heading off to Best Buy/Office Max and getting a small drive.

2. Should I hack the second phatbox after all is done? Benefits?

Thanks for any advice. This forum is great and the having someone like VorTechS to write PhatHack DMS Tools is awesome!

1. Any 2.5" IDE (PATA) drive that is 5400rpm or less is recommended

2. Hack all boxes you have, that way if any original drive dies... you can always replace it.

Don't know if I am being too concerned for future phatbox failure.... but I am putting in a new drive in my other DMS and storing the original "good" drive in a safe place. I'm also on the lookout now for a spare phatbox. I'd like to make sure I can continue to use a phatbox in my two passats for the next 5-6 years.

Is anyone else out there this paranoid?  ;D I know... it takes all types...

I've refused to touch my original DMS since I put the hack on a few years ago.
I don't have a spare box though, I had enough trouble getting the one I have!  If only I'd known then what I know now, and things would have been a hell of a lot easier! :D
