Dead 40gig DMS

Hi all hope you can help. I have a BMW Phatbox with 40gig DMS. Whilst trying to update the files on my DMS the system locked up and wouldn't let me eject and save. The disk now appears to be dead as PMM fails to recognise it when I instert it in the cradle. Phathack tools also fails to recognise it. So I'm presuming it's dead and beyond repair. My PC does recognise the disk and says it requires formatting.

Would the easiest solution be to get a new DMS and if so where's the cheapest place to source one. I'm in the UK near Manchester. There's a couple on ebay in the states for £60 - £80, would these be compatible with my BMW system??

Help much appreciated as I miss the system.............. ::) ::) ::)

Though it sounds like the original DMS has packed up, you might want to make sure it's not the cradle at fault before you shell out for a new DMS. 

When you pop the DMS in the cradle, does the green light come on at all?  Does it come on and stay on?  If so but Windows never loads the DMS, it probably is the DMS.

You could also try to confirm the problem with a test or two, depending on your available resources and comfort level with opening up the DMS case:
The best way would be to open up the DMS case and pop in another laptop drive in place of the original.  If that drive works in the cradle, then you know the problem is the original drive.

Or you could open up the DMS case and pop the original drive into an external drive enclosure.  If the drive is recognized by Windows, it strongly suggests that the cradle is the problem.

Anyway, if it turns out you need a new DMS, eBay is probably the best place to find one.  Any DMS can work with your system, just be sure to confirm with the seller that it is an original DMS.

Thanks for the reply, when I place the DMS in the cradle the green light does come on, sometimes flashing and sometimes stays on. I presume this mean the cradle is OK.

So my best option is ebay, there's 2 for sale on there at the moment, one much cheaper with new cradle too but the seller says it's for a GM system. I've emailed him and he's unsure if it will work, but from your advice any DMS will work.

The GM system cradle is no different.  However, the green light flashing up on yours is potentially a good thing.

If you take a look under 'Computer Management', does the disk appear there?
Also, take a look in 'My Documents\PhatHack Media Manger\Logs' there should be a file called 'StartupSequence.txt' or something like that.
Can you post the contents of this file up - I might be able to tell you if it's the cradle or the disk... ;)

If you do get one of those kits, could you do me a favour and take a backup of the firmware before you go ahead and wipe it? ;)

The green light flashes a couple of times when you insert the DMS then goes out and just the red stays on. I can hear the disk periodically spinning up. I think I'll go for the GM kit sounds the cheaper option and yes I'll get a backup before I do anything with it. In explorer I can see both disks, but when i try to access one it says it needs formatting.

There is no sign of the USB disk.  So unfortunately this doesn't help us move forward any.  I would try another disk in the DMS to rule out there being a problem with the cradle.

Thanks, I've bought the GM based DSM listed on ebay in the States. You say all DMS's are compatible, I take it you mean without any hacking etc. I will be able to load it up with tunes, stick it in the player and away we go?

Sorry if I sound like a numptie here, but just needed clarification.  ::) ::) ::)

 You will need to swap the firmware on the DMS first.  Use the DMS tools to do this.

I had a similar experience happen, the harddisk was went bad in my case
