DIY DMS...
« on: October 08, 2005, 11:25:17 am »
DIY DMS:
(OR: Building an 80 Gb DMS for almost 1/3 retail price...)

You can probably find a better deal if you spend enough time searching for an extra DMS cartridge.

Lately, DMS cartridges seem to be running about $100 for a 10 Gb and $150 for a 20 Gb on E-Bay.

An 80 Gb DMS for about $145 with 100% new parts didn't sound like such a bad deal to me.

--------

How to aquire an empty DMS case other than someplace like E-Bay:

(NOTE: judb pointed this link out in another thread)
http://www.kenwoodparts.com/parts/search.php

search for KHDCX910  and get 1 of each item listed as:
    DMS-CASE-*
    DMS-CAP-*
    DMS-IFBD-*

13.10 DMS-CASE-0001 CARTRIDGE TOP
10.72 DMS-CASE-0002 CARTRIDGE BOTTOM
 2.82 DMS-CASE-0003 CARTRIDGE LATCH
 1.61 DMS-CASE-0004 DMS CATRIDGE BUTTON
 1.61 DMS-CASE-0005 CARTRIDGE SPRING
2.41 DMS-CAP-0001  TOP RUBBER ENDCAP for hard drive
2.41 DMS-CAP-0002  BOTTOM RUBBER ENDCAP for hard drive
10.15 DMS-IFBD-0001 CONNECTOR BOARD (The adapter that converts the hard drives ATA-6 connector to the phatnoise plug)
-----
44.83

 6.50 1st class mail (USPS)
-----
51.33 TOTAL

90.00 - 80 Gb toshiba laptop drive from www.newegg.com
 2.99 - shipping

145.00 (approx) for an 80 Gb DMS.

You will also need 4 small machine screws to hold the case halves together.  I didn't bother trying to figure out what part # they are as I happend to already have some on hand that were the correct size...  (I checked them using the DMS that came with my keg before making my order above.)

Once all the parts were assembled, it took about 10 minutes using juds boot-CD iso to hack the new disk, a few minutes to flash the keg and the new drive works perfectly! :) :) :)

THANKS JUDB!

Nice post dc4bs.

I'm in the UK & they shipped this lot to me for £38, I now have a new 80 gig DMS waiting for me to run the hack on it.

Oh & the part number for the 4 screws that hold the DMS together is PNCL-130002.

;D

This is awesome.

I'm getting ready to order these parts. Can I assume none of the info in this has changed?

Thanks.

Only one way to find out....  ;)

I just entered DMS as a part number and they still list all of these parts, and at the same prices too.  I bought a set late last November - delivery was less than two weeks to the UK.

Good luck!

Okay thanks.

Just ordered the parts. Still have a lot of reading on the forum to do... like to learn about this "patch".

I still have completely functional 20GB DMS so suspect this won't be too hard.

Thanks again.

If you get one over 120GB remember you'll have to replace your linux with the lba48 version available at http://downloads.phathack.com/sbingner/linux-lba48.bz2

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822152051 is a 160GB for $160

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148073 is also 160GB but probably a higher quality for $175

What if your not running linux?  What is the largest gig you can use with windows?

Nothing to do with your PC...

Sam was referring to the file named linux which holds the linux kernel and which is on the hard disk in the DMS (the Phatbox runs Linux).  The standard Linux kernel in the Phatbox cannot go above 127MB.  The kernel that you get from the link above does not have that restriction.  You just rename your linux file to something like old-linux and copy the new one in its place, then pop the DMS back in the car.  Since this is the kernel, there is no need to do anything else (no firmware update, etc), it is just loaded each time you turn the ignition switch.

I opened up my DMS to get the model and characteristics of my drive.  It's a Toshiba HDD2164 20GB drive, 4200 RPM.

Has anyone used a faster drive?  Most of the 120GB Toshiba drives out there are 5400 RPM.  Will the Phatbox care?

As long as it's an ATA-100 drive - speed won't matter.

I'm using a Seagate Momentus 60G drive which is 5400 with no problems. :)

I would strongly suggest not using a 7200 RPM drive.. faster rotational speeds mean more heat and there is no good way to transfer heat from the drive to the DMS case to the outside air.  Just keep that in mind.

That was exactly my concern.  Thanks.

The Fujitsu MHV2120AT is a 4200RPM 120 GB 2.5" drive.  5200RPM may be fine, but I think I'll stick with the 4200 to be safe.

Something to be aware of when buying a drive to make a new DMS:

I purchased a 120GB drive, and the parts to build a DMS.

The new drive differs in a very small way from the drive in my original DMS.  On the original drive, the metal case of the drive (which carries all the labels) stops short of the connectors, so if you hold the drive with this plate toward you (so you can read the labels) you can see the connector pins protruding at the top of the drive.

On the new drive I just received, this metal plate extends far enough to cover the pins.  In other words, the connectors are recessed, rather than protruding.

The rubber end caps mentioned in the list of parts fit over the fore and aft ends of the HD, presumably for shock absorption and snug fit.  The end cap that fits over the business end of the drive (where the pins are) has a little block of rubber inside, which fits up against the end of that metal plate.  Well, on the drive with the recessed connectors, this causes a problem, because it meets the end of the metal plate too soon.  So the rubber end cap doesn't fit properly, and hence it won't fit properly inside the DMS case.

I'm going to try carving out that little block of rubber from the end cap with an exacto knife, but I thought it would be good info for anyone considering replacing their DMS HD.  I'm sorry, I haven't been able to find useful images to illustrate this.

There can be differences like this between drive types unfortunately.  At least the main dimensions are pretty stable.

Can you let us know which drive you have bought and if it is working OK in your car?  Thanks.
