Are All Base Phatbox units the same?

This question has probably been asked many times before but, can a Audi/VW phatbox be installed in a BMW?  If one of the special BMW Biltzsafe adapters/cable is obtained, could one of the many available inexpensive Audi/VW phatboxes be used?  They look different from the outside, but are the insides the same?  I understand the Audi/VW Firmware may need to be updated for BMW for this to work.
