PMM doesn't stop and eject DMS
« on: April 30, 2006, 11:52:16 am »
Today I successfully changed my 20 GB DMS to a 80 GB Toshiba drive. After a few problems (but I found all solutions in this forum  :) ) the new DMS works fine in my Phatbox. But there is one last problem I couldn't fix until yet: when all music is written to the new DMS my PMM saves all data and the other stuff but does not eject the DMS. PMM says "another programm is locking the harddrive". I've stopped my AntiVirus and ZoneLab but the problem still exists. After a while (not reproducable) I can eject the harddrive with the tray icon. Any clues for me?

Go into the drive hardware properties and make sure its policy is set to Optimize for quick Removal.  That can cause ejects to take a while as data is cached instead of written directly to disk.  also make sure that you don't have any explorer windows open to either drive letter for the DMS.

If the above post does not work another member and I had similar  problems  I  suggested this http://forum.phathack.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1128485345/1#1 which worked for both of us.

Something copied on the DMS from the hack CD was causing issues with PMM and was stopping both  DMS's from ejecting although we had some other issues as well it might be worth a clean install without running the hack again.

Yep, I already did that before I wrote this thread - but there was no difference, the problem still occured. Next I ensured that no other programs were working and I also deleted the "forceupdate"-file.

At this time I guess that I must be patient when ejecting the DMS. As I could see it lasts about 1 or 2 minutes and I can safely eject the DMS. I think I can live with that delay.

Actually, lots of other things can cause PMM to fail when ejecting the DMS.  If you have any explorer windows open, not necessarily to the DMS, it can fail.  Turn off System Restore as well.  And if the USB cradle is plugged into the front of your computer, plug it into a USB port in the back instead.

However, I had the same problem in the past, and even if you get that message from PMM, you can still just close the program (despite the danger warnings) and use the "safely remove hardware" option from your Windows system tray.  You should find that all necessary file operations were completed and it will function normally in your PB/Keg.

I even tried this option and the same error message occured. Whatever, a few minutes ago I synchronized my PC with my DMS and the eject feature worked fine  :o. So I guess it's a feature   ;)
