I read the DMS hacks, but one major stop is YOU NEED A WORKING DMS. Does anyone know how to change the drive without having an original DMS?.

In theory yes - in practice no.

If you read through the many posts on this forum you will understand why.  There are many reasons, but all relate to the way that Phatnoise decided to lock the user in to buying DMS upgrades from them.

I know a way to do so, but it is VERY COMPLICATED... you have to add a serial port to your box

Exactly - you know how to do it involving low level system knowledge of the Phatboz and of Linux - and one or two other geniuses with brains the size of planets could work it out.  But it is certainly not simple, therefore to mere mortals like me, the simple answer is no...  That's why you guys created the hack disk, right?  And the fact that the hack disks requires an original DMS first still makes it the easy way to upgrade the box.  And for most people it works. :)

Like it now says at the top of every page - "Please remember to use the search button (and set the search time frame to all posts)... and check the wiki at wiki.phathack.com before asking for help. Almost every question possible has already been covered!"  That last statement certainly applies to the question "Is there another way...?"

I think I love you S80_UK... just so you know.  HAHA..

That's not ENTIRELY true, but close... if somebody gets a serial port working on a box, and linux running I can send them a program that will make the phatbox boot anything...  it just has to point at the proper serial port... it's essentially a run-time patcher that does the same as the hack and how I tested the patches before actually making the changes in ROM.   Then of course you just need a modified patch program to patch the alternate locations, which I could compile easily enough ;)

really, anybody who got a serial port would be good.... I could make the rest pretty simple, even make it run from a pre-made VM

Fair enough - but I was trying to avoid anyone asking you...  I don't know about you, but I have little enough spare time as it is.  :'(
