After learning about the PB, I started scouring Ebay for cheapy units.
Managed to get just the player for £18 and got an original 10gb DMS for about £20.

OK, I don't have a cradle but after taking the DMS apart I don't think that's a problem as i'm sure I can connect it to my PC with an adapter just to whack a few song on there to get me going.

I'm not gonna ask about firmwares as I know there is a shed load of info that I can trawl through and I have found a Grundig to Sony converter so i'm hoping pumping the PB with Sony code will get it working to a fashion.

What i'm confused about is the wiring.
I have seen the pin out diagrams but still need info.
Do all PB's have the same 26 way D connector on the back?
Do the PB's normally come with a 26 way D to female (whatever) connector that the original CD multichanger lead plugs into?

I can make the leads up if I can find the 26 way D plug, I suppose I could always butcher one off Ebay.
Anyone got a Sony connector lead as strangely they never appear anywhere you can buy them.

Sorry for the questions, I know there is a search button but you sort of have to know what to search for.
I'm not afraid to use it if you can give me the right words  :)

The company where I sourced my  26 pin connector is on this link if that helps.

If you look at the Pinouts page (http://www.phathack.com/index.cgi?page=pinouts) you'll also find this at the top:

The Phatbox end of a cable is 3M Part#10126-3000VE or 10126-6000EC and can be ordered from: http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=10126-3000VE or http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=10126-6000EC respectively

I'd reccomend the -3000VE part which is the same timps referenced above (solder cup) and you can also find a shell for the solder cup connector as 3M P/N 10326-52F0-008 from Mouser at http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=10326-52F0-008

I never did find the Sony end to buy by itself... you'd think mouser would have it somewhere, but I couldn't find it.   If you do find it, let us know

I would imagine the Sony connector is one of the many standard round DIN sockets.
Cheers.

sbingner

You might, but it's pretty non-standard... you saw the picture/diagram of it on the pinouts page as well?

You may be able to get a "JVC KS-U15K" (http://www.cardomain.com/item/JVCKSU15K) and chop the end that's similar to sony off and use it... but I haven't seen it myself and am just going off what I saw at http://sophana.free.fr/pmwiki2/index.php5/GNUnilink/Howto

Evilution

AH! it's the unilink connection, sorry I was thinking way back to early Sony when they used DIN.

I can easily get a PC7-4300 unilink cable and butcher that.

Evilution

OK, got my lead thanks to az1324.
Plugged it all in (i'm running a grundig stereo with a grundig to sony CDC adapter),
I haven't yet installed the sony firmware to the DMS or PB yet (still looking for a cradle).

I get lights which is a goodish sign. As soon as I put the DMS in, both lights come on, the green goes out, about 3 seconds later comes back on and both lights go out. I can only assume it has turned itself off. I read the manual for this and it doesn't seem to be there.

Any ideas would be great, cheers.

I don't know for absolute certain, but it sounds very much like it has booted and initialised and then gone to sleep because it is waiting for the headunit to wake it up (which it won't until you have the correct firmware installed).   So I was say it's probably working up to this point.

Evilution

Thanks for that, damn, I really do have to find a cradle now ASAP.
I keep an eye out on Ebay and I see a few over in USA but being in UK the postage is a bit silly and all UK sellers seem to think the cradles are made from solid gold the way they price them.

Evilution

OK, to follow on from another post.

Updated the PB to Sony code (I assume that's what it was doing anyway), flashy lights for a few minutes and then off.

Same as before, turns on when plugged into the stereo, both lights come on, the green goes out, about 3 seconds later comes back on and both lights go out. Turned itself off.

No manner of button presses will bring it back to life.

Never mind, I have taught it a lesson with a big hammer, that thing won't be annoying me any more.
