We think we now have the new hack process working as we need, and sbingner has tested an EXACT image of my DMS prior to running the hack on 3 separate boxes.
We are therefore now looking for a cross-section of people to help us in a controlled test of the new hack process with a private release of a new PhatHack Media Manager build next week.
We are particularly interested in people using older versions of the hack [pre v0.8] and especially anyone who has not yet run the hack. This is not a pre-requisite though, the hack should still run irrelevant of the current version.
Technical expertise is NOT required, but you must be a user of Microsoft Windows [Vista should be supported, but has not yet been tested] with a working DMS cradle, and have appropriate rights to install an application on your PC.
If you are willing to take part in the test, please reply to this thread - or provide me with an appropriate e-mail address to contact you on via private message.
For those who are concerned about the requirement to download PhatHack Media Manager, I have now also made this available as an installable stand-alone hack tool.
Don't be shy!
Thanks to those that have already volunteered!
I'd love to but I've been out of town for a couple months and didn't bring my USB cradle. I kind of feel bad because I remember that I was going to help you out with the static voice prompts but didn't because I left town right around that time.
I can test but not sure I'll be successful since i wasn't able to get my 60GB drive to ever work in my phatbox.
can be reached at vladkotik@gmail.com
Well, we got your box patched - now to just get the drive working!
I just ran the patch myself, and can confirm that it successfully ran on my CX910.
I did however have to disconnect the box from power, wait 30 seconds, and then re-connect the box with the DMS still inserted before it worked.
But it did work! :)
Bah, spotted a bug in the new patch process!
After a successful patch, and successful verification of the patch - it's installing the PhatNoise startup sound instead of the PhatHack custom startup sound.
;D
I'll try it. :)
I can try it too. I have an audi/vw phatnoise. I have used the DMS hack v. 1.5 boot disc to create three new 120GB DMS cartridges in the past. I can redo any or all of them to test it out. Been meaning to reorganize all my music anyway.
I could give it a shot. I have a virgin DMS and Phatbox (VW) that I can try it on. I've used the dmsutils hack process on two other boxes and got them to work.

I have a new 160GB Seagate drive arriving next week - so count me in. :)
(Box is hacked, but getting the new drive set up using the new tool rather than by hand as I did it last time could be worthwhile).
Les.
I have yet to complete the work on the new drive tool.
At present testing is limited to the hacking of the boxes only.
However, the new drive tool will be able to run independantly of the Hack Wizard.
I'll let everyone know when the drive tool is ready! :)
For those keeping a close eye on this, I'm still working on the replacement for NewDMS.bat. I've had to revert to C++ because this kind of thing can't be done in C#, and I couldn't get it working in C#.
My current process is able to create two new partitions on the disk [Primary Fat32, and Extended Fat32] I'm just struggling to find a way to format them.
you, as far as I know, can't format them using the windows API since there are limits on fat32 to 32 gigs or below in size using XP and Vista..
You'll need to have shell calls and bundle the same formatting utility that we are using, or import the source for it because i believe it is open sourced code.
mkdosfs.exe is what we've used in the scripts. it should not be too hard to include it and just shell execute that command right?
Anything that will get my drive working ,I'll try -
Work still progresses with the NewDMS.bat replacement - and I'm pleased to say that I finally have the new DMS partitioned and formatted correctly.
I'm just working on the PhtSYS/PhtDTA file transfer process, and will need to add in an option to select the destination firmware [so that you can use the utility for multiple drives and multiple destinations] without having to use our beloved PhatNoise Media Management software.
So again, we'll be looking for testers specfically for this process when it's ready which should be by next weekend. As usual if you can spare some time to test this with a blank, or pre-formatted DMS the help will be welcomed!
gumbyandpokie999: Please send me your e-mail address and I'll send you the last release of the hack.

I sent you a PM, but if you'd like further assistance testing this, I should be setup by this weekend.
Could I get a copy of this? I sent you a PM about this as well.

Just placed an order for a new 120GB WD120OVE and was lurking the site in preparation for upgrade. If you still need another tester, I'm willing to give it a try. Email is ranman at houston dot rr dot com.
Win XP SP2
Original 20GB Phatbox - BMW firmware 9.0
USB 1.1 cradle (ouch)
Onward through the fog.
Hi, Im willing to try both of mine. Got a Kenwood Keg with 10Gb DMS never hacked, with a new 100Gb ready and waiting. Also got a Phatnoise for my Audi with a 20Gb DMS.....Again with a 100Gb drive ready to go.
Let me know if you need me to test.
Regards....
Please PM me your e-mail address and I'll add you to the list.
We are getting close to a full beta roll out of the latest tools!
[Just a few minor things need ironing out]
I'm willing to give it a try. Sent a note earlier but haven't heard anything. If you need an email, send it to
rmgroff at enter dot net.

VorTechS is away this week - he may contact you when he's back.
Les.
Sign me up :) I have a hacked phatbox and have a 60gb drive to hack up now...
VorTechS - just wanted to post and let you know that I followed through with the wizard after the initial hiccup (sent in separate email). Everything worked like a champ. I have a hacked DMS and a new demon has taken residence in my Phatbox to growl at me each time I turn it on:-)
I think I may know what was throwing off the logic in looking for the DMS. I use one of the INOI media tanks to hold an external DVD drive (see http://www.inoi.com/English/dw567b.asp for example). It also has a 6-in-1 card reader slot that can throw off the driver lettering (and might mislead the USB/removeable drive mapping). The DMS cradle was plugged in to the USB outlet of the media tank. I don't know how rare that configuration is, but you might see something similar in the rest of the community.
I'm ready to go on to the next stage. Let me know if I can try the alpha track for the new DMS config or if I should go through the traditional approach.
i've noticed that if the phathack DMS wizard creates the DMS drives and swaps the drive letters (so phtdta has a lower letter) that PMM will write data to the wrong drives. Be careful that you don't run into that issue.

Jud, you're still confused about terminology here ;)
The 'Hack Wizard' applies the hack to the PhatBox - it doesn't do the new DMS stuff.
MacDaddy wasn't on the Alpha test (the new DMS creation).
As for the Alpha test, I really need some more testing done on this so I can finish the job off - it's gotta be real close to working now! :)
MacDaddy, thanks for the info. You're right, there might be an issue with WMI seeing additional USB devices and treating them as disks, although by the looks of the error you got, with no disk ID. I'll take a look at the logs and see if I can work out what upset the Wizard and get you to try it out for me again just to make sure it get's to the next point.
Once we get beyond this point, then I'll add you on to the Alpha track - perhaps if I get a few more people on this we'll work out why the New DMS isn't working in the PhatBox. ;)
Sounds good to me. Just let me know how I can "reset" the wizard and I'll be glad to try it a few more times before changing out the physical hard drive.
I also have two laptops and a HTPC that I can try the wizard from for more diversity.
PS - would it help to send you the sysinfo from my home machine (I'm at work now, but could send to you later this evening)?
I don't think there is any need for the SysInfo - I just need to sure up the stuff reading the WMI results, which I'm on to now amongst adding some additional code for what looks like the remaining problem with the NewDMS replacement.
Hey if you still need testers. I have two virgin boxes and would like to upgrade my DMS to 120GB (already have the HD). just let me know
M
Testers are always needed! Thanks for the offer.
Send me you e-mail address and I'll send you some instructions and the link to the latest tools.
Sorry, forgot to check the forum. I have started the upgrade on one of my boxes (haven't finished yet). I'd love to try out the new set up. Currently I'm having some problems with the old method (Boot x- failed for me. I'm going to run the updater again), but I'll be happy to use the new setup on my second box.

E-mail sent, I'm not around until Wednesday now so I'll pick up any further mails on this topic then.
If there is anyone out there with BOTH Vista and Windows XP I'd really appreciate hearing from you to aid with some confirmations that we require with the new tools!
Thanks for the program. I have both XP and Vista. I have successfully hacked one of my two units using XP. I can try the other unit using vista. Do I need to download anything else?

heres my luck with the beta test after testing the unsuccessful manual way...
my other post for more info = http://forum.phathack.com/index.php/topic,1278.0.html
"" ok, i have the audi nav+ headunit, "same commands as the concert2 etc"
im not sure of the firmware, will mm tell me?
as for the new drive, i followed the instructions and did the test for the "invalid track" but it gives me a no changer error almost instantly.
i unpatch'd the old cart. then try'd the new beta sw, it repatch's me, then tells me to insert the cart into my dms to let it update,
so i do this and it plays my first 2 cds as normal instantly, i let it run for 15 mins, still the same, no update and i only have my first 2cds now when i had over 60..
so i re-insert the cart into the base and run the beta wizard as prompt'd and it tells me im stuck at step 6 and to insert my cart back into the dms to update!
:bangshead: Huh
should i wipe the old cart and restart?"""
