I was thinking if this drive wasn't SATA then I may be able to take the hard drive out and use it in the Phatbox.

I doubt this will work for the simple reason that it is very unlikely to be parallel ATA. The web site for Hitachi's drives show no PATA 2.5 inch drives above 160 gigs. They have SATA up to 250 gigs in that form factor. I cannot be sure about this one of course, but I believe that some USB drives these days are even optimised from the cost perspective so that they do not have standard interfaces on the internal drive which makes them impossible to re-use elsewhere.
