Right after I insert the cartridge with the new hard drive, I get the following:
USB 1-4: new high speed usb device using ehci_hcd and address 5
scsi2: scsi emulation for usb mass storage devices
USB 1-4: reset high speed usb device using ehci_hcd and address 5
scsi: device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 2 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
Any ideas?
Unplug all other USB devices. If that fails, your disk has problems or your machine does with the kernel on the boot CD
Thanks for the response. I just tried my girlfriend's computer and got the same result. I'll try my work computer too in a little while.
I'm trying to remember if I'll need to do something else other than just putting the cartridge with the new hdd into the phatnoise cradle? I know this gets me to the error message in my original post, but once I get beyond that will I have to tell the software that this is the new hdd?
If it doesn't work on my work computer, then I guess it's a hard drive problem. I don't have any jumpers on it. Is there anything else I can check for?
Okay, 3 computers and no success. I put in an old, smaller hard drive and it was recognized immediately. It looks like I'll have to deal with returning the one that isn't working, unless anyone has any ideas?
Also, I'm still not sure how to continue the process once the drive is recognized, since I'm starting from scratch?
Thanks.
Wait, this is the NEW drive you are having trouble with?
Did you make sure its not jumpered for slave or cable select?
Correct, the new drive and no jumpers on it.
and you are sure that no jumpers == master for your drive? It is for mine but just to be sure perhaps you should check the docs? have you tried directly connecting this laptop drive to your PC with a laptop to IDE converter? perhaps the drive is bad?
Yeah, sounds like either the drive is bad or its jumpered wrong. The jumper settings are usually on the label affixed to the top of the drive.
Thanks for all the help.
I think it's a bad hard drive. I triple checked that no jumpers==master. I'm sending it back and trying to talk myself out of paying too much for a new one today instead of waiting for the replacement to arrive in the mail.
I'm still not sure how to skip ahead to the step where I put in the new hard drive? Or will the entire process still go with the old cartridge even though I already did that once up to the point where you put in the new drive? Do I just need to do that?
See my post at http://forum.phathack.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=dmshack;action=display;num=1123119033
That will work fine if you just need to build a new DMS (that is, your box is patched)
Just got a new hard drive tonight, went through Genesis' other post, and it's working great now! Many thanks to Genesis, Jud, and everyone else who worked on the solution and who helped me.
Now I'm off to search the posts for a way to turn off the annoying bleep after selecting an album.
