Title: Wich format to use when ripping CD's?
Post by: jrs on September 25, 2005, 11:40:51 PM
I have just bought a Volvo Jukebox, wich as I understand, is a Phatbox.

Now I wonder what's the best sound format to use?
I have tried MP3 with 320K VBR, is this the best format to use, or is maybe WMA bether?

My system came with the Phatnoise Music Manager, and I also wounder if I should upgrade to Phatnoise Media Manager Plus, to get AAC encoding?

As you can see I am sort of confused here :-)

Greetings from Norway

192kbps should be your minimum, whether using aac, mp3, or wma.  I prefer aac myself, but VBR MP3 is probably the "best."  Unless you want gapless playback...

You actually can get gapless playback with MP3s on the PhatBox - I'm using it here. Take a look at http://phatbox.sixpak.org/phatbox/unsupported.phtml. You also need to create the MP3 files with a fixed bitrate (otherwise the track skip lands in an unpredictable place). There are some other tricks to this which aren't covered on Vince's page - if there's interest, I'll create a full writeup.

Love to hear about all the tricks/hidden features available!!
