Title: Sound quality not all I could hope for?
Post by: Diluted on July 24, 2006, 10:32:02 PM
Any one else having problems with the audio from the PB?

The audio seems to have too much midrange, and sometimes sounds very hollow and echo-y.  Sometimes, the instruments sounds awesome but the vocals are almost completely lost, other times the vocals sound like they are in a tunnel.  Any ideas?

I have not experienced that because of the phatbox.  I have ripped music and had less than stellar sounding compressed files but there are plenty of ways to avoid that.. www.hydrogenaudio.org has a lot of info on that i seem to recall.

could be a cable issue or something but I doubt it.

Without wishing to re-open the "which encoder / bitrate is best" argument, I have noticed that some of the default encoding settings in the Phatnoise software are not always the best that are usable.  Have you tried different bit rates, MP3 ws WMA?

Of course, "hollow and echo-y" could point to some other problem, possibly in the cabling.

Another possible cause would be if you had taken audio compressed elsewhere and then re-compressed using the Phatnoise software.  This would often sound as you describe.

turns out it's the cable.   >:(

Anyone know where the instructions for fabricating a right angle adapter are?

Thanks
