Success with the 160GB drive
« on: April 07, 2006, 01:45:57 pm »
Took the plunge last week and went ahead and replaced my 20GB DMS with the 160GB Seagate that is available now.  Thanks to the excellent instructions and the automated patch (and the new linux file to support larger drives), this was about as easy as I could ever imagine.  Major kudos to the gurus that have figured all this out.

Everything was as I expected with the whole process, except on a whim I tried accessing the new DMS from Phatnoise Media Manager (I still run ver 3.51).  I was able to access the new DMS and I am currently using this instead of the older Phatnoise Music Manager.  I was under the impression that it wouldn't work but was pleasantly surprised when it did.

It's flippin' sweet to finally have all my music inside my vehicle.  It's a bit overwhelming but with some proper playlists I think it will be very manageable.  I currently have 23k songs on the DMS.  I haven't noticed much difference in performance while using the Keg.  Once in a while after pushing the Scan button for the first time I'll get a little lag and then the system comes back around and never hiccups after.  But that's really the only thing I have noticed.  It's been working like a champ.

The only real big difference is working with Media Manager.  It took a little while to get all the music on there as I couldn't just grab all the files, drag them onto the DMS and walk away.  PMM would lock up.  I started out slowly dropping a few thousand on at a time before adding more.  I eventually ended up dropping on 8k songs with no problems.  Shortly after all the music was on the DMS so I couldn't find the optimum number of files to drag and drop at one time.  A moot point now as it shouldn't be a problem going forward.  Ejecting the DMS for any reason now takes over an hour (took the same amount of time when I added 3 new files to the whole collection the other day).  That's not exactly convenient, but will just have to be worked around.  Generating voice prompts with PhatVoice now takes a ton of time too.  I have a spare 10GB DMS laying around so I think if I use this in conjunction with the larger drive I can just generate the voice prompts I need and move stuff back and forth and get everything happening as fast as possible.  I run a P4 2.0ghz with 1GB of RAM with the USB 2.0 cradle.  Not the latest and greatest, but a decent machine.  I'm sure things would improve quite a bit with a more modern machine.

Anyways, that's my experience after using the new drive for a week.  The Keg has now become the all encompassing system I've always dreamed of having.  Very cool stuff.  If I notice any new quirks, etc. I shall report them.

Everyone have a good weekend.

it is possible that it just has issues woth my two USB controllers.... I've replaced my main system, and will try again sometime and see if it works with the new PMM... but check your event log for HDD errors... that slow behavior is what I saw with media manager... music manager did everything fast and didnt henerate hardware errors...

Hi,

I am looking to try out the new kernel, initially with my current drive just to take things a step at a time.

I can download the file "linux-2.4.18-lba48.bz2" from many of the hosting sites, but when I open it with WinRAR I only find a file called "linux-2.4.18-lba48".  It is not clear to me what I should now do with this file.  Can you advise?  Should I rename and overwrite a file on the DMS? If so to what, and which file?  Or is there some other process needed?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I know almost nothing about Linux as such - but I am happy to try this and restore my DMS if I screw it up.

Many thanks,

Les.

That file just needs to be renamed to "linux" on your PHTSYS partition (replacing the current linux)

I have a 100G drive that I am useing with over 26Gs of music
and it only takes a minute or two when I save and eject the
cartrige. Taking over an hour seems kind of long.

Exciting! :o
Can you guys give me a link to the pages with the howto and the softwares you are talking about? Also, whats the model number of that Seagate drive? Thanks!

The instructions are no different than replacing with any other drive.   The only quirk is that you must replayce the "Linux" file on the DMS with the one located at http://downloads.phathack.com/sbingner/linux-lba48.bz2  (just extract that file and overwrite "Linux" with that) and the fact that you need a USB 2.0 cradle and that in my experience it does not work properly with Phatnoise Media Manager where it does with Music Manager

Excuse my ignorance, I'm new. Where are the instructions you are talking about?

Hi,

OK - I will try to explain this (but you can find it all by reading around on this forum  ;) )

Before you can use any non-Phatnoie-suppled hard disk with a Phatbox, it is necessary to disable the various checks that the resident software (firmware) in the box makes on the disc and its files.  The guys who provide much of the support for this form created a bootable CD that you can use to make this a relatively simple process.

Click on Home, then DMS Hacks, then DMS Hack Disk - Image Heavy and it will bring you to here...

http://forum.phathack.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1122424315

Read it all very carefully.  Then download the ISO file (use the link in the first message) and then use Nero or similar CD burning software to create a CD from the ISO image (in Nero the option is normally called "Burn Image").  This creates a CD which under Windows will appear not to have files on it, but it is in fact a bootable CD.  If your PC cannot boot from a CD you may need to tweak your BIOS settings.   Then follow the instructions on that forum page (probably best if you print it before you start).

Putting it very simply, the CD takes a backup of some stuff from your DMS cartridge, and then puts some new files on.  When the DMS is put back in your Phatbox, it then runs these files to do the firmware modifications.  Once completed, you can then use the software on the CD to copy the needed information onto a new (larger) hard disk.  You then use the regular Phatnoise sofware to put all your music on this disc.  You will then be able to use your original or your new disk to hold music.  That's it.

Hope this helps you.

Les.

That was very clear, thank you. :) I did lots of reading through the phathack site, but it was difficult for me to distinguish what the latest and greatest procedure was. Exactly what you just wrote should have a page of its own on the Wiki. Thanks again!

To get back on topic, I hope to be replying again to this thread with a success in a month or so.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148073

Here is a link to the drive.  The price has fallen some lately.  About 3 weeks ago I paid $299 and that had fallen from the mid three hundreds.  One time buy.com will be cheaper and then the next time newegg will.  I'm sure other places will be comparable as well.

Good luck.
