Hard Drive Survey
« on: April 09, 2005, 03:11:14 pm »
Okay folks...

I think this is going to be important for our search for drive firmware / SN editing capability.

We need to come up with a list, an exact list, of
drive size / firmware rev / company name / CHS info

for every drive size that Phatnoise sells DMS for...

This info should go into the FAQ.

I think we should also collect a serial number from at least one of each drive size / type and the magic cookie area of the drive to store so we can do testing of diffrent drives.

I'll copy that stuff to the FAQ as soon as everyone posted it here, ok...?

Okay, on second thought, I dont know if they could release a firmware update that nukes serial numbers that we post.

I think that having someone collect the info for the time being in a more restricted space might be a start.. or am I just being crazy?

No, you're not... That's a good point, but serial numbers are not unique across all vendors. Blacklisting them would endanger them that other user's DMS don't work anylonger with that kind of firmware. And as they also wipe out the orginal vendor- and modelname, they can't just use some kind of vendor-secific serial-checking,

People should still list their manufacturer, model, ID string, and firmware revisions, etc. here though. Just don't post serial numbers.

Mine:
Kenwood 710 Keg 10GB DMS
Toshiba MK1016GAP  HDD2152 E
Firmware: U1.14F
ID: Phatnoise 10GB DMS

I'm guessing at the ID as I don't have the drive in front of me. I'm sure it's the same as many others, so I'll edit my post if someone posts the exact string before I bring my DMS inside.

Thanks A543... I guess none of the other folks that visit this board have drives they can post info about. :(

Thanks for the nod judb, I contribute what I can.
Even when the posts move into an area that was beyond my knowledge and I couldn't contribute much, I still read them and helped when I could.
This thread is yet another way for non-technical people to help out.  We could still use the help from the Red Boxers that had offered it too.
Step on up people, don't be shy.  ;)
