250 GB HDD in the Phatbox?
« on: August 05, 2008, 10:26:17 am »
Now i want to make a 250 GB Phatbox.
I read that only the Phatnoise Music Manager can use the 250 GB HDD and not the Media Manager. Is that right?
Can i use the 250 GB HDD in the USB 1.1 Cradle or not?
And can i hack the Firmware with the Phathack Tools V2.12?

By the way i have the Phatbox for VW. But can i modify the Phatbox to the Phatbox for Kenwoodradios?

There's an issue with PhatNoise Media Manager that _may_ prevent your disc from being usable without the hack to a DLL.

You can definately use the DMS tools to apply an alternative firmware to the new DMS (or the old).  Make sure you choose the correct options for the state of your box.  As you say you have a VW that you want to convert to Kenwood... this means:

Install non-hacked firmware should be checked (when the box is not hacked)
Reflash box should be checked

Once your firmware is updated then try the try the hack, and you can then think about starting to use your new disk.

FYI: PhatHack Media Manager does not have any issues with any disks, of any size.

Not sure about the cradle question though....do a quick search it may have been covered before.

A USB 1.1 cradle will not work with a 250GB drive -- well, it will work, but you'll only be able to use 127GB of the drive, due to limitations of the USB 1.1 standard.  You'll need a USB 2.0 cradle.

Phatnoise Media Manager will NOT work with a 250GB drive -- at least no one on this forum has ever reported success in that regard.  There may well be a hack to make it work, but it remains undiscovered.  (Windows Vista also seems not to like that drive.)

Phatnoise Music Manager will work, to some degree.  VorTechS' Phathack Media Manager will work with the drive.

If you want hassle-free operation, personally I recommend going with a 160GB drive.

If you are going to use your Phatbox with a Kenwood radio, you will need the Kenwood cable to connect it.

Ok thank you very much.
And with a 160 GB drive there are no problems with the Media Manager and the Music Manager, Vista?
I have the USB 2.0 cradle.
Then i think i buy the 160 GB drive.

Is the Phatbox supported by all the Kenwood radios?
The newest Kenwood radios too?

I've used a 160GB Samsung drive with Media Manager under XP and Vista, no problem.  I haven't tried it with Music Manager, but it should work.  Media Manager 3.92 requires a hack to the DLL to get it to work with most non-original drives, which is explained here:  http://forum.phathack.com/index.php/topic,1581.msg10279.html#msg10279.

Apparently, 2008-2009 Kenwood radios do not support the phatbox/keg, but 2007-2008 models do.  Search the Kenwood site for your country, and you should be able to find a catalog showing the 2007 models.
