Connect 5141 head unit...
« on: November 03, 2008, 03:02:46 pm »
Hello PhatHack'ers.

I have CX910 set and I need for a head unit. I learn a lot of Kenwood head units in network and I think that Kenwood KDC-W5141UGY head unit would be perfect for me, it have best requested fuctionality/cost rank. But the compatibility with PhatBox is not specified.
And I have one question, Is this head unit compatible with CX910 without any special adapter?  ???

The KDC-W5141UGY is a 2008-2009 European head unit.  Kenwood U.S. head units from 2008 on apparently do not work with Kegs/Phatboxes, so it stands to reason that the same may be true for European models.

See this thread for more info:  http://forum.phathack.com/index.php/topic,1703.0.html.  The user tried everything to get it to work and finally someone from Kenwood told him it won't work.

You should search for a 2007 model instead.  I have a 2007 European Kenwood head unit, which works fine with the Keg.

Too expensive in my country $410.00. I am looking for something in 150-200 USD range, it will be perfect if it will have red buttons light  8)

How about Kenwood KDC-W4031Y ($175 in Ukraine)? Anyone know when it started? How about it's compatibility?

Any head unit from the 2007-2008 catalog should work with the Keg.

Bought Kewood KDC-W7037Y head unit.
It is listed in 2007-2008 catalogue.

Connecting devices...switching on...

CX910 powers on hard drive, all leds are lighting....waiting for several seconds...and then CX910 shutdowns hard drive power supply and switching off leds...
Head unit shows that CD changer is connected but I can't do anything with it.

What is wrong? Help please...

That the head unit sees a CD changer is a good sign.  This is what I got the first time I connected a Keg.  However, Kenwoods often need to be reset after the first connection to communicate properly with the Keg.  After the reset, it should see the Keg as an External HDD, and work properly.

There is a reset button on the face of the head unit, to the left of the FNC button.  You have to use a pentip to press it.

If for some reason the reset does not work the first time, you might have to disconnect and reconnect the cable from the Keg, and reset again.

You have the Keg and the cable for it.  There is no other adapter.

Did you buy your Keg new or used?  Did it come with the DMS cartridge, or did you buy it separately?  Do you know for sure if it is an original DMS?  Have you loaded anything onto it?

I bought used Keg via eBay, but I was unable to test it for a long time, because I hadn't head unit for it long time but now I have. It comes with DMS cartridge and with cradle. I think that this is original DMS because it has 20GB space. I have loaded onto it some test music, as well there are was some music....so the DMS with cradle works fine.

Hmm.  I am probably wrong, but my only thought is that the Keg could be running an older firmware version.

On your computer, with the DMS connected, go to Tools-Preferences-DMS-Firmware/Plugins.  It should show you which version of the firmware is installed on the DMS.  The last Kenwood firmware version is 13.01.  If the DMS is running an older version (any number less than 13.01), it's very likely that the Keg is also running the older version, and needs to be updated.

In that case, download VorTechS' Phathack DMS Tools (in this thread:  http://forum.phathack.com/index.php/topic,1641.0.html).  Use the DMS Tools Mode to load the 13.01 firmware, being sure to check "Install Non-hacked firmware" and "Reflash box with firmware."

To flash the box with the firmware, take the DMS out to your car and put it in the Keg.  Turn on the radio so that the Keg powers on.  The red light should be on and the green light should be blinking, indicating that the update has started.  You can turn off the radio and leave it for 10 minutes or so.  When all the lights are off, the update has completed.

When you start up again, see what happens.  Most likely you will have to reset the head unit again, and you might have to disconnect and reconnect the Keg.

Of course, if the firmware is already up to date, I am afraid I am out of ideas.
