new version of dms patch
« on: March 13, 2006, 05:03:28 pm »
Is there any ETA on the new version of the patch for using the new large drives?  I see that the price of these drives has started to drop ($300 on buy.com) and was thinking of taking the plunge soon.  Being a rookie at the whole thing, I was hoping that the nice automated process would be updated.

Along with that, from my readings on the forum, the following is required as well.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

1) the USB 2.0 cradle to perform the patch
2) the older version of the Phatnoise Music Manager (instead of the newer, I-Tunes looking Media Manager) to get music onto the 160GB DMS

Has there been any other findings on performance, etc.?  My collection currently sits at 127GB (22k songs).  I am just wondering if things would work good or if it would grind to a halt.

Thanks!

Well, unlike Sbingner, I don't have one of these large drives yet so I can't speak to their performance.

The USB 2.0 cradle I believe has to do with windows / linux driver support for LBA48 access and would make sense that it is required.  But I can't say for sure at this time.

As far as I know we only got one donation which I think Sam was going to refund if we didn't get any more but I am not sure about that at this point.  Which, by the way, I think is really weak.

I'll eventually buy a larger drive but it wont be for a few months so I won't have any reason or ability to test out changes to the process so I'd say it would be out by summer.

You can just replace the kernel with the LBA48 version Sam posted and it will start working for you.. you don't need a special CD to make it happen.  At this time though your mileage may vary.

So that means I run the regular patch, then just take a certain file (this kernel file) after the patching process is complete and overlay it on the DMS and all is well?

Yes.. just run the latest patcher and then download the kernel update after the patch has been completed.. make your new DMS, install the firmware on it. overwrite the kernel on the phtsys partition with the one from Sam and it SHOULD work.  Thats not a promise that it will but its my understanding.

It works in my box...   but please read the original thread for a complete explanation.  The new version of PMM would not work with large drives, but the old version did.  The USB 2.0 crade IS required.

Is there any advantage in making contributions via Sourceforge using this link as suggested via the Hall of fame thread

https://sourceforge.net/donate/index.php?group_id=155805 ?

Or is it simpler / faster / more efficient to send funds to Paul directly as I have done previously.

Just thinking about a further cash injection for the PhatOS / big drive project...

sending money to paul goes to forum support etc, the sourceforge link goes to support PhatOS and the LBA support.  I've started documenting all donations via the sourceforge site at http://www.phathack.com/donations.html but I need to get a prettier view.

Note that sourceforge does take a portion of those donations, so I could set up another account on paypal specifically for this instead that would not incur charges or it could be sent to sam@bingner.com -- but I don't mind supporting sourceforge and so far I've just been 'matching' the part that goes to SF myself and counting it as the full donation (on all 2 donations)

Ok, I have downloaded the updated file so the 160GB drive would be supported.  I see 2 files on my DMS that have the word "linux" in them.  A file just called "Linux" that is 801KB and a file called "Linux.sig" that is 1KB.

So after I use the regular 1.5 patch disc, I overlay which of the above files?

The only file I have posted is "linux" so that would be what you need to overwrite

Thank you for your help.  I have a USB 2.0 cradle on it's way.  Now it's just time to convince myself to drop $300+ on the drive!
