Announcing the all new PhatHack DMS Tools for Windows!

The new DMS tools are now generally available!

After a long wait and several successful Alpha and Beta tests of the new DMS tools, I have taken the decision to unleash the latest version of the new DMS tools for the general community.

The new tools are (excluding Hack Files, DMS Disk Signature Backup and Formatting Code) entirely sourced from my own code and the updated code will be available on SVN in due course.  The tools are standalone application with an easy to use GUI and a little bit of documentation on the side.  I'll offer general support myself for the application (bug fixing etc) for anyone that runs into problems with the tools. 

Please PM/e-mail directly if you encounter any problems with these tools and I'll do my best to provide solutions where possible.

Check out the documentation for some work-arounds to some of the things that have, and may, crop up again.

Expect some aspects of these tools to be updated over time, I still have to finish the 'DMS Restore' functionality that you can see the toolbar icon for.

Requirements

Check out the documentation for PC requirements.  To be able to run the tools you must have the .NET Framework 2.0 installed, which is available from here:

• Added automatic device ejection on successful patch application.
• Added 'Flash PhatBox with Firmware' option to enable firmware switching. (Experimental, may cause your PhatBox to stop working - recoverable)
• Added 'Update Firmware' button to perform firmware updates only. (Unproven, and may cause your PhatBox to stop working - recoverable)
• Added 'Install VIOT' option to install Kenwood SSA. (This installs and works fine, if your data files are good that is!)
• Fixed error when no firmware available for loading.
• Added backup URL for Firmware XML files.

Version 2.5

• Fixed issues caused by WMI returning device entries with no signature information

• Fixed issues caused by WMI reporting invalid partition records

HI,

I tried on my already hacked keg the AAC plugin.
Selected the firmware then checked both the VIOT and the AAC plugin.
It all went fine, but it still doesn't play AAC files.
Previously it said that I didn't have right plugin or something similar.
Now, the keg announces the album name, displays the track then shortly changes to the next album.
or I misunderstood that I'd be able to play aac files.

Sorry forgot to get back to you on this yesterday.  It looks like a problem with the encoding of the AAC files that AACPlay can't deal with.

Some of them I converted with Nero, the others I got from other sources.

No big deal, though. I have only one album in AAC, I will recode the CD in MP3.
Just wanted to see (hear) how AAC compares to MP3 in the car.

Probably aught to update the main downloads site... The downloads link from www.phathack.com brings up an FTP site, and the version of DMS tools I found there was 2.8 (which I assumed was newer than 2.12!)

--Edit: I finally had time to identify the path of the 2.8 installer that confused me... It was http://downloads.phathack.com/vortechs/DMSHackTools.zip which I found by clicking through from the home page and assuming that VorTechs was the principle so I'd find the current version there.

The Nero encodes may be the problem.  You could try running them through dBpoweramp with the AAC optimiser plug-in.  That often (but not always) sorts things out.  While not wanting to get into an "A is better than B" war, in my opinion, AAC is much better than MP3 at low to medium bit rates (say 128kbps or so).  At higher rates the difference will be less noticeable to most people, although it will also depend on the audio content and the encoder and encoder settings used.  Me, I use FLAC for most things since it's lossless and well supported by the Phatbox, and AAC for stuff like audio books.

This was after trying to upgrade the firmware to VW 7.02 with AAC.  Guess it didnt work.  How can I revert back?

uber newb here btw.

Things I will try:
1. Create New DMS
2. Attempt to restore backups of playlist.
3. If 2. fails add a few songs and hope my player recognizes the DMS

Just for the record the system did say "Your box is Unlocked"

I then tried the update firmware (which i should have skipped).

My theory is that I need to start my DMS from scratch and hopefully that will work
Worst case.....I try more stuff.

Update:

I restored the original files from the randomly extentioned backup tgz files and this appears to have resurrected my DMS.  Not sure if the patch is still there but I reran it anyways and it said "Patch already installed"

I'm guessing updating firmware updates/new DMS will not work for me unless I unpack the original backup files?

I'll have to play around more, but it seems having a spare DMS would be an advantage.

There may be a problem with the VW 7.02 files, as I've had a few reports of this now.  Reverting to a previous version seems to wield better results (alledgedly)

Turns out I was making a newb mistake and not giving the DMS the proper amount of time to reflash the box before trying to play my music.  I noticed after putting my DMS in it would flash green for quite some time.  I then read in the manual that that means it's flashing and I should not touch it for awhile.  Go figure that's what it did and all is well.

AAC is workig.
I encoded a CD with PMM's own AAC encoder and it played fine in car.

 This is a great program, you and everyone that helped you put in some serious work and I for one appreciate it. My process worked the first time through. I was hacked and loaded in less than an hour. I am using an old 60gb toshiba 7200rpm for the moment, but I will be upgrading to a 100gb seagate 5400 rpm drive this week. Thanks again.

WHats this program? DOes it replace Phatnoise MediaManager? I've been looking for a better alternative to PMM and havent been able to find one. My problem is i habe a lot of international music and going through and selecting language FOR EACH TRACK aint no easy task so i figured i'd look at whats out there

The hack had already been applied.

EDIT: REMOVED THE CONTENTS OF THE FILE BECAUSE IT TOOK TOO MUCH ROOM AND I HAVE SINCE GOT IT WORKING. READ BELOW.

EDIT: i shut off the unit.  removed the DMS.  removed the cable for 5 minutes from the back of the unit.  Re-Applied the patch and it worked.
