There may be a problem with the VW 7.02 files, as I've had a few reports of this now.  Reverting to a previous version seems to wield better results (alledgedly)

I used the VW 7.02 on my new DMS and it works fine, so far.

Thanks, I have a feeling for some reason the patch (the hack process itself) isn't writing log files the first time round in some cases.

We'll monitor things....

Hi VorTechS.  Per your post in the other thread of mine, I wanted to dump you the exception that was thrown.  FWIW, this was during the Hack wizard, after I had performed a manual backup using DD with the if/of settings from the wizard.

This is on a Dell Latitude D830, 2GB of memory, running Vista 32-bit pre-SP1 and using v2.12 of the tool.

Code: [Select]
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

Okay, it's nothing serious and you should still be able to run the hack okay.

This has occured after the patch has applied and it is trying to eject the DMS disk.  You said this was on Vista?

My fix for the problem I posted above (that looks like it fixes the backup problem as well) was to create a new shortcut to StandAloneDMSHackWizard.exe and tag the shortcut as "Run as Administrator".  This allowed me to get through the backup step and ultimately patch my non-hacked DMS with little hassle.  I would strongly recommend adding this to the Wiki and documentation as I bet it will save lots of folks on Vista lots of hassle.

I was able to successfully patch my PB as when I came back and reran the wizard, everything passed with flying colors.  Excellent!

But then when I tried to setup the new DMS, the drive isn't displayed in the tool.  It shows up in the Safe Removal dialog, and I see it in the USB section of Device Manager, but not in the Disk Management section nor the PBHack tool.  This is a WD 160GB drive (reported as: WD1600BEVE-0).  I'm going to try to reboot, as this feels like windows and not PBHack.  Argh.

Standby.

It actually wouldn't let me by this exception.  When I tried to continue, PBHack would hang.  I tried this three or four times with the same results.  Ultimately I ran it as administrator (see post above) and everything worked a-ok.

I think Vista and the tools does need elevated rights... I think this has been covered somewhere before.  I'll sort the ejection issue in the next version so a warning is used when ejection fails.

Drives not appearing in Windows is another known, but as yet unresolved issue.  Need to get me a nice clean drive sometime and check it out.  But if the disk isn't appearing in Disk Management there is no way the tool can pick it up as the tools use the same method of getting disk information as 'Disk Management' does (WMI Queries).

I didn't find the note about Vista, but I also didn't perform an exhaustive site search.. :)

So is there any fix for the unmounted drive?  Rebooting didn't work.  I'm going to start scouring the internet now...

Have you tried an alternative USB port? I have often found (even using XP) that Windows can "forget" how to see a specific device on a particular port, even though the same port is OK for other things.

Have just upped my Phatnoise from 20Gb to 80GB, the DMS tool worked flawlessly, ICBJ's tip about running it as administrator (for Vista) meant that I did not have to use the command prompt either, so thanks to all.
Overall, MUCH easier than I had anticipated, replaced the Fujitsu drive I had with a Hitachi Travelstar which fitted precisely too, so no messing about.
Any spelling mistakes/ grammatical errors are there purely to annoy

hey there, so you can update the drive in your phatbox and just run these tools to sort of format the drive?  is that the case?  and if so, what software did you use to load music onto it?  the original 3.92 software or the newly developed 0.0.0.9 Alpha software from this site?  thanks a lot!

Either will work, although my Media Manager application is still Alpha at the moment so may contain bugs that I'm not aware of.

just wanted to let you know, i downloaded your Alpha program tonight, loaded about 1GB of music and it worked like a charm, the only thing I think i noticed was that the upload was slow (I have USB 2.0) - but otherwise things seem great, the voice rec is working and i can access the files without too much problem.  (that's one thing I never loved about the phatnoise controls through the 2003 Jetta's Monsoon stereo, but hey, can't have your cake and eat it too!  thanks so much for this software, it's must easier than creating discs with PMM

The upload issue may be because it transcoded the files rather than copied them.

Go into the options screen:

1. Tools --> Options
2. Encoder Settings
3. Media Device/Folder: Select the DMS
4. Check the option 'Do NOT transcode to this device'
5. Click 'Save'

This will then ensure the application COPIES the file to the device rather than re-encodes it to the device.
To explain, the re-encoding function was designed, for example, to allow you to store the highest quality rip on your PC and reduce the quality of the file on media devices to maximise the use of space.

I hope this is the right place to post this - please feel free to move it if it's the wrong place.
On v2.12 winxp pro - .net 2.0 installed

I find that every time I try to create a new DMS and in the middle of the formatting DMS (phtdta) stage it always comes up with the following error.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer

It looks like there's a problem picking up the new partitions drive letters.  There's a stage where the tool waits approximately 30 seconds while Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) catches up with changes to the drive, before then re-querying the drive to find out what new drive letters have been assigned to the drive.

Have a look in the log files (My Documents\PhatHack Media Manager\Logs) and mail me a copy.  As soon as I can get control of my server again I'll take a look at the logs and see if there is any indication as to why the drive letters are not being picked up.  It's possible I need to change this loop a bit to re-try for a longer period in case your PC is running a bit on the slow side.

PM sent! Thanks for the quick reply.  Not sure if this is relevant -  ??? - I've been using a non formatted drive to do this.

Okay, it seems like you are having trouble with downloading the firmwawre files.  I'll raise this one up the chain a bit as it seems to be a common issue at the moment...
