IF the box is patched...

Boot the patch disk.

Insert your ORIGINAL (legitimate) DMS.

ALT+F4, hit ENTER.  Get "#" prompt.

dd if=/dev/sda of=/tmp/image bs=512 count=2048

(substitute "sdb" if your DMS identified on sdb when inserted, etc)

WARNING: Mis-typing this command can HOSE your DMS!

Wait until you get a "#" back.

Remove old (valid) DMS.  Wait 30 seconds to insure that it completely detaches the old USB volume.

Insert new (non-valid) DMS (the new disk)  Wait 30 seconds until you see the attachment of the new (hack) DMS.

BE VERY SURE NOT TO INSERT THE WRONG DISK!  YOU WILL OVERWRITE A VALID SIGNATURE AND RENDER THE DISK NON-ORIGINAL IF YOU DO!

dd if=/tmp/image of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=2048

(again, make sure "sda" is the correct device - whatever your new DMS identified as when you inserted it)

Wait until the green light goes out and the "#" prompt returns.

Remove the DMS.

Powercycle the machine.

Re-insert the (new, hack) DMS and wait for it to identify.

ALT+F3.

Repartition/reformat the DMS (fast, no block check)

Allow the operation to complete (will take a couple of minutes.)

Remove the DMS.

Remove the hack CD.

Reboot to Windows.

Insert the DMS.  PMM starts and does some initialization stuff.  Go to OPTIONS, DMS options, and load the firmware onto the new (hacked) DMS.  Make sure the correct firmware for your head unit is selected before you load it!

Go into your PHTSYS directory and remove the "forceupdate" file (not strictly necessary, but there is no reason to force a box update.)

Use PMM to put your music on the new (hacked) DMS.

Do the usual save/eject function.

Enjoy.

No problem.

Note that you can get a copy of "dd" that works under windows, and from that save the signature off a valid DMS.

Once you have that, you can actually clone disks for a hacked phatbox without needing a "valid" DMS first - the only tricky part is that first megabyte of the disk that contains the signatures.

You can also use the procedure above with any DMS that boots - even in a hacked box - since the results only work in a hacked box anyway....  So once you get one running you can use it as a "seed" for more, and/or grab the signature blocks off that disk and stick them on your PC's harddrive (the file is only 1mb in size)

Just be very, very careful with "dd" - if misused it will scribble all over a perfectly valid disk, rendering it worthless AND THE DATA ON IT UNRECOVERABLE.

Since Forum rebuild I was not anymore able to find this hint... I lost two hours getting around to look for it (I remember I read this just few days ago...).

The links to previous messages in actual messages are screwed up...

Wouldn't be more useful to create something like a FAQ list ??? ;-)

Is this still a concern with the VW Audi PhatHack?

I'm not sure I understand what this does.
Getting my HDD soon, and want to be prepared,
thanks

This is what I have a question about, but maybe it will be clear when I try to do it...

When the DMS is identified by the hack CD it will have a name shown on the screen  some identify as sda but some might identify as sdb.

What it means is replace any instance of "sda" with what ever the drive is labelled as in any of the text you type.

So

dd if=/dev/NAME OF YOUR DRIVE of=/tmp/image bs=512 count=2048

Dont type the full name just what its identified on sda, sbd etc.

Also, take great care with the use of the dd command.

The two operationns are different.

The first copies from the original DMS to your PC.

Quote
dd if=/dev/sda of=/tmp/image bs=512 count=2048

The second copies from your PC to your new DMS.

dd if=/tmp/image of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=2048

Get this wrong, and at best it won't work.  At worst, you will irreversibly corrupt data on the original.

But take your time, think it through, and you should be OK.  It worked for me and for many others too.

So, I tried this technique with the hack disc.  Still having problems.

The last step of the hack disc... copying the files saved from phtsys... this fails.

At what point am I supposed to use this, 'Genesis' command?
I have switched out the DMS HDD several times, and I'm still not getting anywhere.

On the original DMS, the phtsys partition is approx. 259MB

on the new hack DMS, the phtsys partition is only 60+ MB
and it is full of mostly empty folders.  phatman.ini has some info, everything else is empty.
