Cradle power
« on: January 17, 2018, 09:26:29 pm »
Hi all,
Bit late to the world of Phatbox but have just bought my first.  ;D
Quick question regarding the cradle/docking station. As it's imported from US do i need to alter any wiring- there is no power delivered to the unit at all- no LEDs light up. No PC detection.
Thanks in advance

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you need to change anything. Of course the power must match what you have. I mean 120 or 220 volts (I don't remember if the adaptor is auto-sensing), but nothing else.

Maybe you could just check if the adapter is providing the right voltage. If it's not working it's a pretty standard one, so you could use another one. I've used a universal laptop adapter sometime.

If the adapter works you'll need to check if the cradle is working. And that's too much for me to help you :). I opened it once because the switch that turns it on when you put the DMS in it was broken, and I don't remember the electronics to be very complicated, but anyway too difficult for me.

Something else you can do: if your cradle doesn't work, you can use an USB-to-ATA adapter. The software works just fine with that setup too.

Regards.

Ps. Welcome to the wonderful (and ancient) world of Phatbox :)

Hi there,

At some point there has been a windows update in which usb drivers, to let windows see your dms, were deleted.
Take apart your dms and insert the hdd into usb to idee adaptor. The new adaptor is much faster. One problem I encounter is ‘ejected’ is performed correctly due to conflict with rights.
I save eject on hardware in windows it self. Had no problem with this detour.

Just take care of connecting the hdd right into the idee port. In my case a msata to idee adaptor to fit a 250 gb mSata hdd. Notice the missing pin on the downside (onderzijde).

Thanks for your replies. I actually went and purchased another unit for £20 off ebay came with the same adapter type plug and worked - i tried it on the one that didn't work and guess what..... least i have a spare unit now.

Went to fit it into the car (Skoda Superb MK1) an the connector doesn't fit !!! THe car has a flat type connector - cable for phatbox is a round din connector - GUTTED..

Does anybody know if this will do the job:

Or if anyone knows anywhere cheaper/more local that stocks what i'll need?

Thanks in advance all.

The "flat connector" is the standard VW/AUDI/Skoda CD changer cable.

If you have a VW Phatbox the phatbox cable should have a corresponding flat connector.

Note that Phatboxes for each car type have different connectors and different Firmware versions (to match the CD controls from the car head unit).

There is some info here  on cable pinouts https://www.phathack.com/pinouts.html
