Patch still not working
« on: June 07, 2006, 12:21:32 am »
I am patching an Audi unit... I am using PMM 3.76 with about 18 playlist each with between 50-700 songs, yes I have run out of space on the original 20Gb.  For patching I haveonly 2 playlist - 1 has the original welcome and the other has only 6 songs.

http://wiki.phathack.com/DMS_Hack_and_Repair_CD

I have used the 'DMS-Hack-or-Repair-v1_5.iso' patch CD and all seems to work fine, I put the original DMS into the car and i get the voice 'your phatnoise has been unlocked' or something like that,  but I then switched the disks and continued with the patch CD.  I then tried this in the car and the head unit displayed 'no cd found'...!  I re-tried this and still got the same result.

I then tried the proc from Genesis which most have found to work, but not for me????

the box is patched, something isn't right with your new drive it appears.  try rebuilding the drive using the DMS repair portiton of the boot cd.  repartition / reformat the NEW DMS and go into PMM and have it put the latest firmware on the drive.  then remove the forceupdate / forcesettings files if they exist.  see if the drive works like that.

Thanks judb for the reply

I ran the repair from the boot CD and no errors or bad sectors found, repartition/reformat the new drive and loaded the Audi 7.02 fireware, removed the forceupdate (no forcesettings found). loaded 2 playlist and still getting the 'NO CD MAGAZINE'

do I need to copy any files from the original to the new drive...?

again no log files on the new drive...?

put forceupdate back, and let it reflash your box -- it could need it

I put the forceupdate file back and tried again and still not loading - 'no cd magazine'.    I left the unit for about 30mins.

The red/green light  both came on solid and then both off, this just kept repeating.

Would it be worth sending my new disk to have it loaded on another box to see if it works or if they can get it working....?

Better still anyone got any further suggestions I can try...?

I will of course donate to you guys for your efforts on getting this working.

Does your old disk still work in it?

If you sent it to me I'm sure I could make it work with my box, but that doesn't mean it would work with yours ;)   With a properly patched box the only stuff that should matter is:

1.  Partition 1 is FAT32 PHTSYS containing the PhatBox operating system and other necessary files (which loading the 'firmware' puts there)
2.  The first extended parition (4) is FAT32 PHTDTA containing a playlist with music so you can tell it's working
3.  The drive is set to master

I might be able to help you if I cought you in IRC or something, but it's hard to troubleshoot something like this remotely...

Oh, I wouldn't make the PHTSYS partition too big - the results of that is unknown.... 100MB or so is fine

Tried again and still not working, got hold of another drive and still the same.

I deleted the partitions on the drive run the CD and still no luck, I then followed Genesis instructions as before and still no luck.

This time I delete the partitions and followed Genesis instructions, loaded the firmware and load playlist still no luck.  I did the same again but did not load any playlist, just the firmware and the welcome to Phatnoise just looped.  well this is a great sign.  so I loaded one play list with 6 song on and this also worked...?

I am not 100% sure why this is all now working other than - not loading any playlists after the firmware, putting the keg into the car, play the startup.  then pull and load another playlist and this seems to work.

I am now in the progress of loading the full list of music.    If all is well or not - I will report back

All music now loaded and seems to still be OK...

I am using a WD drive and it seems to be hotter than the original drive...?   is this something to worry about...?

I take it the original drive is a master and must be kept as a backup...?

At this point I would like to thanks all for the help and a big thanks to the guys who set this site up and guys who created the patch and the CD.  as promised do we have a paypal account for this site which I can donate some $$...

Tempratures of drives can be an issue.  7200RPM drives should not be used in the DMS carts in my opinion because those drives get too hot.  There is zero air flow and the hotter something runs the shorter its lifespan will be.

There is a thread someplace for donations to cover server costs which is for Paul, the guy who runs the site..

There was also a thread about rasing money to cover Sbingers costs for getting > 137 gig drives working..  I don't have links to either handy.

If you're worried about the temp, get a thermometer and put it in or by the phatbox and see if it's getting out of operation specs... I expect that the thing that would go out would bt the HDD tho, so as long as you're not too worried about that you'll probably be fine.

If you want to donate to the PhatOS project you can use the sourceforge interface at http://sourceforge.net/project/project_donations.php?group_id=155805 -- I dont see the link for paul anymore...

Hi - I have been using a WD 5400 rpm drive since December in the UK with no temperature issues.  Even in the past couple of rather hot weeks with the car sitting in the sun all day everything seems fine.  Mine is a WD Scorpio (WD800UE model).  BTW, the spec that you listed is for a 3.5 inch drive (check the sizes and the weight).

If it is working well now, I would not change the drive.  Even if it gets warm, there is less other heat and a lot more air than in the average laptop PC.  And if it does break, well, now you know how to rebuild a new drive very quickly and no need to patch your box again.  :)
