Connecting a volvo phatbox to a kenwood headunit
« on: March 01, 2007, 01:16:49 am »
Hi, is there somebody how can help me with the following problem?

I have a volvo phatbox which i want to connect to a kenwood head.
I've seen several schematics for making your own cable. There are a few things i can't figure out
on the schematic of the kenwood connector they named the pins as
1. clock input/output
2. audio left
3. data output
4. data input
5. request data
6. audio right
7. reset output
8. audio ground
9. mute request
10. changer control
11. vcc +12v
12. ground
13. request output
on the schematic of the connector of a volvo unit they are talking about:
run , busy, data, audio screen , clock and audio left and right.
My question is if the following is correct:
run goes to pin 10 on the kenwood head
busy to pin 4
data to pin 3
audio screen to pin 8
clock to pin 1

If this is correct than there is still the firmware update to be carried out.
Are there any more things i should do to make it work?

You need a kenwood cable, once that is done you just need to update the firmware and you're good.

The only thing that's always the same pin between HU types is + Audio left/right, ground, +12V and ACC

If you're asking about the Kenwood HU, look at the table in the middle... it shows what every pin on the PhatBox side connects to on the Kenwood side of the cable

Correct - don't try to map the Volvo control signals to the Kenwood head unit.  When you put the Kenwood firmware into your box, the interface configuration is changed to suit the Kenwood cable.  As Sbingner says, the audio and power pins are the same on the 26-way connector between units.  The Volvo box has an additional power socket, but you should be able to leave that unconnected if the unit gets its power via the head unit cable (check power and ground before connecting the Phatbox).

Will this same procedure work to convert a Kenwood Keg to connect directly to a VW HU? Is it really as simple as just replacing the Kenwood cable with a VW cable, and updating the firmware?

Yes.  It is that simple.

There are some cars that this doesn't work on, you have to have a newer release phatbox to support but VW is okay.

Sweet! Right now I'm cool with it being Kenwood, as I use a PIE VW-to-Kenwood adapter for a Kenwood Sirius module and the Keg. But, eventually, I might drop the Sirius module, if they ever start charging me for the subscription. (I bought it used, and it's been working over a year now with no subscription.) And, If I remove the Sirius module, I'd rather run the Phatbox directly into the VW HU, instead of going through the PIE adapter.
