Which 100GB Disk Should I Buy?
« on: July 03, 2007, 02:26:23 pm »
I hacked both of my Audi/VW Phatboxes with the old-school method.  I have an 80GB drive in one, but a 20GB drive in the other.  I want to upgrade that 20GB drive to a 100GB drive.

Which one should I buy?  Is one brand more reliable than the others?

Here are the current prices at NewEgg:

$64.99  SAMSUNG Spinpoint M Series HM100JC 100GB 5400 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM
$65.99  HITACHI Travelstar 5K120 HTS541210H9AT00 (0A50108) 100GB 5400 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM
$65.99  TOSHIBA HDD2D08 (MK1032GAX) 100GB 5400 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM
$71.99  Western Digital Scorpio WD1000VE 100GB 5400 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM
$87.99  Seagate Momentus 5400.2 ST9100824A 100GB 5400 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

Thanks.

Hi,

All of them should work - but I would choose the Western Digital - partly based on my own experience, but I also think that for the price it is better specified (ruggedness, etc) than the Samsung, Hitachi, etc. Seagate is good, but perhaps a little pricey in comparison.  But be careful not to miss any bargains at the 120GB level - they are getting cheaper all the time.

Cheers,

Les.

Thanks.  I'll go with the Western Digital.

And I know that prices are always coming down; I just don't want to wait until infinity + 1 to buy it!

But do all those disks fit into the cartridge?  ???

I have a rev B cartridge and only Toshiba disks fit into it.

Sure it fits if you make it fit.

Seagate disk:

Toshiba disk:

A Toshiba disk fits perfectly into my cartridge while the Seagate disk does not.

any drive will fit into the cart provided it conforms to the correct specifications on drive size.  only toshiba drives will fit without some cutting of the rubber shock absorbers, but it isn't a serious modification to adjust these rubber pieces.
