Please help, ran the hack and can't get past step 6
« on: February 29, 2008, 02:57:31 am »
Okay, I downloaded the DMSHackTools v2.1
I ran the backup of the DMS
I then ran the hack wizard
It verified my DMS was original and went to step 6.  I closed the wizard and the application, then stopped and ejected the DMS using the "Safely Remove Hardware" button on the taskbar in XP.
I put it into the PB in my GTi and when I power up and select the PB I get "No Changer" on the headunit display
I disconnected the cable, waited several minutes and removed the DMS.  I repeated this several times.
The lights on the PB - one is steady red and the other is red but a little faint.
When I put it back in the cradle and run the wizard again I get

"It would appear the patch failed on your PhatBox, please join the PhatHack Community forums [http://forum.phathack.com] and post the contents of the file PHTSYS/logfile.txt
Patch was not applied or failed to start, there is no patchverify.log" which seems to indicate that the patch has not been successfully applied.

I tried to open the logfile.txt and I receive a message that it is corrupt.

Where do I go from here?  This thing worked fine an hour ago  :-[

And here is the PhatHack_Wizard_Log.txt:

<edit: there's a reason for the "attach file" option>

1. Why did you disconnect the cable?
2. Does it play music if you don't have the hack on your DMS?
3. Did it play music before you put the hack tool on your DMS?
4. Did you do anything you're not telling us about?  Maybe change the firmware on your DMS or something?

4. Did you do anything you're not telling us about?  Maybe change the firmware on your DMS or something?

I have an e-mail with just about every log the DMS tools can produce.
It would appear you've run the 'New DMS' Process, the 'Update Firmware' process and the 'Hack', which is not a good thing.
So could you please verify EXACTLY what you did do and in what order.
As I can see it, at 20:25 you ran the hack and for some reason at 22:25 you then ran the 'Create New DMS' Process.  You have also run a firmware update.  Judging by the fact the New DMS creation failed (probably due to an issue I've subsequently identified and resolved), I'm guessing you ran the firmware update after the failed hack - but you failed to check the option 'Install non-hacked firmware'.

What we need to do, is put your DMS back to a working state and then we'll run the hack afterwards.

Run the DMS tools again.
Select the option 'Create New DMS' in the toolbar at the top
Select your DMS and the firmware for Volkswagen (v7.02)
Ensure the option 'Install Non-hacked firmware' is ticked/checked
Click on the 'Update Firmare' button on the second (lower) toolbar.

Assuming you haven't wiped the original disk.... simply try it in the PhatBox and it should be back and working.
If not, let us know and we'll do some digging....

Fully guilty of N00b status.

I ran the hack first, and then ran the New DMS/update firmware option...I guess that was my mistake  :-[

I do have backups I created using the DMS tools and the Phatnoise Music Manager though.

I screwed it up.  This is probably as basic as buttering toast to you guys, but I fat thumbed it.

I ran the hack to step 6 on the original DMS and then tried to update the firmware on the original DMS using the DMS Tools before completing the patching process (I think).  I realize now that the patching process makes an image of the DMS that it uses to format usable clones.  I simply didn't read the instructions carefully enough.  There in lies the problem.

Have I bricked it completely?  I ran a backup in DMS Tools first, before running anything else. Is there any method to restore my original DMS back to it's original state from this backup?  Would restoring a backup I performed using Phatnoise Music Manager help in any way?  It works fine in the cradle attached to my PC, just like any external USB drive.  I have been playing music from it all day long.

Here is my timeline from the logs:

20:25 - Ran the hack on original DMS
20:27 - Ran New DMS creator to update the Firmware to VW7.2
20:30 - Ran out to the garage and inserted the DMS.  Turned on the ignition and selected the PB. "NO CHANGER", no sound and it automatically flipped back over to the radio
21:06 - Back inside, tried running the hack/patcher again (original DMS)
21:13 - Tried running hack/patcher again (original DMS) - failed
21:38 - Tried running hack/patch again - fails at Stage 9 - Verify DMS
21:39 - Tried the reset button and re-running the process - failed
21:40 - Ditto
21:57 - Ditto
22:00 - Decided to re-read the manual
22:10 - Mixed a stiff drink (Black Seal Rum & Coke)
22:20 - Beat my head against the wall repeatedly
22:22 - Upped my bid on a brand new Phatbox system on eBay
22:23 - Tore the DMS apart, swapped in my 80 Gb harddrive
22:27 - Ran the New DMS creator - (Formatting PHTSYS....Completed: Failed!)
22:30 - Finished my drink, cried myself to sleep on my wee pillow...
09:00 - Upped my bid eBay again.  Damn you r***u! Stop bidding - it will be mine!
19:00 - Logged into the forums to take my punishment.  Silly n00b, hacks are for Pros.
19:01 - Ohhhhh!  That's what the 'attach file' option does!  :D

You need to:

1.  Put your original DMS drive back in your DMS (silly wabbit, don't do stuff after drinking and beating your head against wall)
2.  Run the tools and load firmware (new DMS or not no longer matters at this point)
3.  Put music on it, make sure it plays the music from PMM
4.  Put it in the car, it may reflash your firmware.  This will be indicated by a blinky light for up to about 5 mins.
5.  If it reflashed your firmware, turn off your car and turn it back on after it has completed blinking and turned itself off.
6.  Turn your car on, see if it plays music.
7.  Come tell us what happened.

1.  Put your original DMS drive back in your DMS - DONE
2.  Run the tools and load firmware (new DMS or not no longer matters at this point) - DONE, USING ORIGINAL DMS HD
3.  Put music on it, make sure it plays the music from PMM - ORIGINAL DATA STILL ON THE DATA PARTITION, PLAYS FROM PMM on PC
4.  Put it in the car, it may reflash your firmware.  This will be indicated by a blinky light for up to about 5 mins. - NOTHING AT FIRST, AFTER A FEW CYCLES IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN
5.  If it reflashed your firmware, turn off your car and turn it back on after it has completed blinking and turned itself off.
6.  Turn your car on, see if it plays music.
7.  Come tell us what happened. - IT WAS WORKING AGAIN, WITH UNHACKED VW 7.02 FIRMWARE INSTALLED FROM DMS TOOLS.

So now that it was in working order, I ran the hack again.  At step 6, I closed the wizard and ejected the DMS.  I put it in the car and it cycled many times, but never played music.  I never received the Hack Complete message.  Head unit kept saying CHK MAGAZIN or NO MAGAZIN and flipping back to the radio, so I would flip it back to the PB (over and over again, at least 20 times).  No solid green light on the PB, but a steady red light even after ten minutes with no key in the ignition.  I disconnected the cable and ejected the DMS (as mentioned in the manual).  Reconnected it and put the DMS back in.  Head unit now says NO CHANGER when I select the PB.

Went back to the PC, plugged the DMS into the cradle and plugged it into the PC.  Just the PHTSYS drive shows up, the PHTDATA shows as not formatted.   I was asked if I wanted to format it but figured I better quit before I screw it up first.  Where do I go from here?

That's interesting... it seems your DMS got corrupted somehow?  Go ahead and use the tools to format it again and get it working (same thing as last time but you don't need to for

I don't know why that would have happened... hopefully your DMS isn't going bad, but just do it again and hopefully it'll work.

How exactly did you apply the hack?  You didn't tell it to install 'hacked firmware' or something like that did you?

Applying the hack does not touch the partitions.  It simply copies a few files and manipulates others, however, because of a hidden sectors issue perhaps there's a problem with the partitions created by the tools when you ran the New DMS process.

If you did a backup using the tools selecting all of the check boxes, there should be a DD backup of the first 1024 bytes of the disk, as indeed there should be from running the hack.  It might be worth putting one of these back on the DMS first to re-instate the partitions as they were originally.  (The backup files are just renamed ZIP files)

Can you attach 'PhatHack_NewDMS_Log.txt' from My Documents\PhatHack Media Manager\Logs, I'll get the drive ID and give you a command line to run to restore the dd backup.

Holding off on that step for the time being, per VorTechs

How exactly did you apply the hack?  You didn't tell it to install 'hacked firmware' or something like that did you?
I applied the hack straight from the DMS Tools, selected the "Run Hack Wizard" button on far left, selected the DMS in the drop down, then selected the DMS firmware (VW 7.02).  I then clicked the third button from the left "Run Hack Wizard" - the one with the gears icon.  It ran to step 6 where I was prompted to eject the DMS and go load it in the car.

I ran the backup from DMS tools before I started anything.  I should be able to use that - correct?

When you say reinstate the partitions - are you suggesting I can reformat them as FAT32 in Windows and then drop the backup files on the drive?  Can I do this using Windows or do I use the Create New DMS option to recreate the partitions?

Well if you bought a new PhatBox it probably came with a DMS, and if yours is bad it should correct that part of the problem ;)

I think VorTechS is playing with his GUI tool... and wants you to hold of on doing anything until he does something.  You can either do that, or do the same thing you did to get it playing music last time again.  If it played music then, I don't see where you'll need to bother restoring that backup because that obviously works.  I wouldn't do the second half that made it stop playing again until we figure out why it made it stop though.

What I was suggesting is, that having use the Backup utility in the DMS tools, and having run the hack wizard you should have more than one DD backup of your original partition information.

Using dd.exe (under DMS_Utils of the DMS tools installation folder) we can put the partition image back onto the drive and have your partitions back as they were before you used the 'Create New DMS' option.

However, if putting the unhacked firmware on the DMS restores the drive then you don't need to do anything as sbingner says.

I am working on version 2.12 of the tools, but you can have version 2.11 of the tools which uses an alternative method of applying the hack and this will probably apply the hack more effectively than v2.10.  If you get the drive working using the unhacked firmware, and then let me know your e-mail address I'll send you v2.11 of the tools to try that.
