My DMS has lost its System Files

Hey guys,

I have an '06 Chevy Uplander with the GM Mobile Media system and a 40gb DMS, (GM build V1.0)
I suffered a recent HD crash on my PC.  I downloaded the Media Manger upgrade V3.92, installed it and reloaded my music with no problem.

Once the DMS is plugged into the cradle, the initialization stalls at 33%. The following error message pops up "The specified I/O operation on \Device\Harddisk2\DR5 was not completed before time out period expired."      I am then given 3 options to cancel, try again, or continue( I have tried them all). Continuing gets the DMS recognized by the PC, but I can't load anything back to it.

The repair function in PMM and PhatHack DMS Tools both say that the System files are missing.

The DMS still plays in the van.

Any advice on rescuing or fixing this DMS cartridge?  Is it time to buy another cartridge or hard drive?

The PhatHack DMS Tools doesn't have a verification option? ;)

I would run a disk check on the PHTDTA partition as it sounds like something might be going wrong there, and this might tell you if there is something more serious going on.  You might want to copy anything you need to keep off the cartridge first though.

Once you've backed up everything you need, try reformatting PHTDTA.  IF you are not confident with this you'll have to wait for a little while until I have the GM firmware available in the tools which I'm hoping won't be long, and then you can try the DMS Tools to do a DMS Repair.

Sam, if you are watching, does the hack do GM boxes?

thanks VorTechS .

I actually had tried the verify in DMS tools.  turns out the trouble was the USB port on my computer.  I decided to plug the cradle into the usb on the back of the pc, directly into the mb, and not use the front usb, which is an extension.  The DMS synced  right up and works fine.

Now, that I have had my near brush with death(this DMS is in my wife's van) I am intent on getting another DMS cartridge and make a workable backup.

Question: Now that my original DMS is checked out ok, can I do this with out the GM firmware being available? From my readings of the forum etc. I think I only need my original to flash another DMS cartridge.

Thanks again.

Yea you can just copy over your original PHTSYS and you'll be fine... just make sure you copy the right files in first... or get lucky :D

I am getting the same "The specified I/O operation on \Device\Harddisk1\DR5 was not completed before the time-out period expired" message when I put the DMS in the cradle.  This is an unhacked original DMS that was not being recognized by my phatbox connected to a Kenwood headunit.  I'm really not all that familiar with the functioning of the DMS.  Any "tell me like I'm in second grade" advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

my guess is that means your hard drive in your DMS is screwed...  is your PhatBox hacked or do you have another DMS you can try?

VorTechS

You can of course always try my DMS Tools to apply the files, using the 'Repair DMS (PHTSYS)' option...

This DMS is not hacked.  I do have another DMS that has been hacked, but I get the same error message when I insert it into the cradle as well.  The unhacked DMS will not play in my car, however the hacked DMS does play in my other car.

I believe that I still have the 10GB hard drive that I removed from the hacked DMS.  Do you think it would be worth the effort of removing the hard drive and replacing it with the 10GB one?

Thanks.

Where might I find said tool?  Thanks.

This DMS is not hacked.

A DMS is never hacked/unhacked... it is the PhatBox itself that is hacked or unhacked.  The DMS is merely the transport mechanism for applying the hack.

If you get the same error with two different DMS cartridges -- you probably have an issue with either your cradle or your computer.  Do you have another cradle or computer to try?
