Software Load Failed/Code 5
« on: July 30, 2005, 09:28:22 pm »
First, thanks for all the hard work.

I made the CD and followed the instructions. When I get to the step where it should "Write flash code to DMS", I get "Software Load Failed" and see "Code 5" at the bottom. I've tried several times but get the same thing every time. I just downloaded the CD at about 2:30 Mountain time on 7/30.

Any ideas? How much free space does this step require?

ah ha!  I have the same exact problem.
and I'm using the newest ISO (7/30 - 10:45a CST).

might be a bug with the new ISO?  chatted with judb for a little bit and he told me to do some stuff but it still doesn't work.

I don't think freespace is a problem because I have 218mb in phtsys and 66mb in phtdata and according to the FAQ, it only requires <5mb.

There seems to be a bug with the sed command we have on the cd rom that is creating an issue.  Give us some time to work it out.  thanks for your paitence.

Hm.. is there a way to tell the difference between version?  I downloaded 10 mins ago and I'm still getting the same error.

well, no not really I didn't think to put a version number in the disc. DUH! hehe..

You could check the timestamp on the server.. perhaps

I've just downloaded from the mirror and i'm getting exactly the same error.
Everything seems to run ok apart from the write of the flash code when it say's it couldn't be loaded 'Code: 5"
I should point out this is with the audi/vw version. Stereo type is T

I used v1_3 and got past this problem (thanks!).

Now, after I insert the cartridge with the new hard drive, I get the following:

USB 1-4: new high speed usb device using ehci_hcd and address 5
scsi2: scsi emulation for usb mass storage devices
USB 1-4: reset high speed usb device using ehci_hcd and address 5
scsi: device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 2 channel 0 id 0 lun 0

Any ideas? BTW, mine is VW/Audi 20GB.

I tried v.1.3 just now (screen still says 1.1 though)
and it fails at the same point, although now it says "Code: 4"

Does this code# clue you in to what I'm doing wrong?

I'm also using VW Phatbox w/ 20gb.

I'm having the same problem on my Audi setup, but with a small variation:

I had got as far as writing the new flash code to the original DMS, but it reported a failure. I then retried with ALT-F4 and /runbuild - it appeared to work but some warning or error messages scrolled by quickly, something about a temporary file or folder. The DMS didn't work it's magic on the car's Phatbox so I tried again. This time I got the partition name error 'Incorrect Volume Name' - I can't see what it thought it was, but it was definitly correct as the DMS still worked on the PC and in the car. I tried renaming the partitions and then back again in explorer and got the same error. This is now where I am.

The manual method looks a little scary to an innocent Linux virgin such as myself, do you think this issue will be fixed in a later version of your wonderful software?

Good work by the way, until I found this forum I was wondering what to do after buying my 60GB 'upgrade' HDD and finding that it didn't work just by swapping!

Cheers, chaps .....

Thanks, but I think the time zone thing might be a problem ... and I think I should try to work it out  myself  - it's the only way to learn you know!
Anyway, reading some of the other posts in other areas since my last one here, it looks like all I need to do is the 'force playlist' thing to make the patch work on my Audi setup, is that right?

In theory, yes.

There apparently are some "Donor" DMSs however that have signatures that don't work on cloned disks.  I don't think anyone yet understands exactly why as of yet.....

Okay, I tried the manual method (reflashing the phatbox part).
When I put my DMS in (with the hacked files), it does nothing for awhile then it says "No Magazine" and went to my radio.   I unplug/replug it again, same result.
I unplug/replug again, but this time I navigate playlist to the 2nd playlist.  It started playing the music in there, but a few seconds later I hear the recording on top of my music that syas something like "your boxed has been patched phathack.com" or something like that.

So I'm not quite sure if it was sucessful or not since the log files are somewhat confusing.  Can someone take a look at my log files and tell me whether the patch was sucessful or not?

anyone know a place to host text files?  seems too long to cut & paste.

If you have entries in the "patch" logfile that read "VERIFIED!" then the patch has run successfully

There should also be a "dmesg" log file in there.

Another way to find out, of course, is to clone your DMS and see if the new one will work.  The procedure to do that manually is here:

Your box is patched.

There are some other things in there which failed - judb is adding to the code in the patch set to enable "other things", but the important one you want - the patch that makes the DMS check always succeed even if your DMS is not "blessed" - is there.

If you want to manually set up the new disk, see the other thread I posted a pointer to.

Thanks Genesis!

With your linked instructions, I'm using a bigger HD now.

Now, out of curiosity, can you tell me which part of the log indicated to you that my phatbox is patched?  My friend wants to patch his too and I want to help him.
