New DMS only showing 127 GB (it's a 320GBHD)
« on: November 28, 2009, 04:25:47 pm »
Partitioned with DMSTools, and in PMM I'm showing 127.6GB free. In windows if I look up the properties of PHTDTA I get the same thing 127 GB free space

Researching this now should have mentioned it was a Western Digital drive. I am finding posts on this.

Read through posts replaced the Linux file (although I don't think I had to using the latest DMSTools) and still showing 127 :(

I would guess you are using a USB 1.1 cradle.  USB 1.1 specs are hard drives up to 128GB.  Anything larger cannot be seen by the OS. Upgrading to a USB 2 cradle will allow you to use the full drive capacity.

Any way around getting a docking unit, say using something like this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182143&cm_re=hard_drive_adapter_2.5-_-17-182-143-_-Product

If I did go with something other than the phatnoise usb 2.0 docking unit, how would I dump music onto the drive? Would PMM still pull up the DMS?

/\ Although now that I read the specs on that enclosure, it's saying Drive Capacity support: 250GB, But it looks like someone in the reviews has had success with the 320GB drive.

If you're using PMM 3.92, it won't recognize the drive in a USB 2 enclosure as a DMS.  Not sure if the problem is with the enclosure or the drive itself, but I've tried it with the 320GB drive, and it doesn't work.

However, if you are using Music Manager 2.30, I believe it will work, if you can live with the limitations of Music Manager vs Media Manager.

Still showing up 127GB after I hooked it up via a IDE to USB 2.0 adapter? Do I have to reformat it via DMSTools to utilize all the space?

Also now getting an error:

Error Ejecting DMS

PhatNoise Music Manager encountered some errors when trying to Eject the PhatNoise DMS Cartridge
If you are accessing the DMS or files on the DMS with applications other than the PhatNoise Music
Manager, close those programs and try the Eject again.

This especially includes Norton Antivirus.
If you have Norton or a similar application currently running, please close it now.

Other possibilities include Windows Explorer, My Computer, Notepad, and Norton Protected Recycle Bin

First thing to check, would be in Control Panel, Admin Tools, Computer Management, in the Disk Management section - does the disk show as it's full size (with multiple partitions)?

If so, then use the DMSTools to 'Create New DMS' and it should re-create the partitions correctly.

I repaired DMS Full successfully, and it's now showing 320GB so I'm going to try dumping some music on it and see if it's working properly.

Update: The drive is still having the ejecting issues that I listed above :(, any thoughts?

It may be completely harmless - it just means that PMM couldn't get Windows to do a "safely remove hardware" on the DMS. You can use the Safely Remove Hardware function directly after exiting PMM - it should be in the Windows tray (normally the bottom right of the screen). You can also try an eject in My Computer - right-click on the drive letter for either PHTSYS or PHTDATA and select "Eject" from the drop-down menu.

PMM's internal eject stuff last worked 100% in Windows 2000. In XP, most (if not all) systems could no longer power-down the DMS. And it only got funkier in newer Windows releases.

You could also try http ://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker (URL intentionally made un-clickable) to show what process(es) have files open on the DMS. Internet Explorer 8 pops up a red warning box saying that site is unsafe due to "This site contains links to viruses or other software programs that can reveal personal information stored or typed on your computer to malicious persons." I downloaded it and scanned it for viruses and it scanned ok. When used, it tries to make a web connection to perso123-g5.free.fr for some unknown purpose. Blocking this with AVG Firewall doesn't seem to effect the operation of the program. It worked in Windows XP for me, but not in Windows 7 x64. Use at your own risk.

Yeah I got it to work by doing the save eject process with PMM, then safely removing hardware through windows and all seems well. Thanks everyone!
