Lost partitions on DMS

I am hopelessly lost. i have lost the partitions on my DMS and I don't know how to repartition the DMS so I can use it. I have a 2006 Saturn Relay with GM Mobile Media system, 40Gb DMS and run PhatNoise MM on Windows XP. About 3 months ago the car stopped being able to read the DMS and PhatNoise Media Manager wouldn't play the music that I had on the DMS. I made the mistake of actually calling the old Phatnoise customer service line. They knew nothing about my system. The Phatnoise MM  wouldn't recognize the DMS so I couldn't use the reformat tools there. Anyway, I downloaded DMSTools v2.12 and tried to reformat my DMS. I was able to go thru the Hack Wizard Mode and patch the DMS but now it doesn't show up in the "select destination DMS for hack" window. The DMS also will not go through the autoplay dialog box when I first connect it to my PC. So I now have the PhatHack MM on my PC but still can't get access to my DMS. When I go under "my computer" I can see drives E: and F: but they show up as just "local disk" and as "not accessible". I'm sure I'm probably rambling but I could really use some help. Thanks.

It looks like your disc could be showing signs of damage.  I'm not sure what, if anything, the hack will do on GM systems - I don't believe we've ever had one to verify the hack.

You also need to note, that as of this time (but hopefully for not much longer) PhatHack MM (my replacement for PhatNoise MM) and the DMS tools are in conflict of each other....so you can't use them on the same system.

For now, un-install PhatHack MM.

In an attempt to get things back up and running, your best bet is to run the DMS tools, and perform a DMS Repair (Full), selecting the GM firmware and the option 'install non-hacked firmware'.  This will re-format your DMS partitions, re-applying the correct labels and re-instate the GM firmware.

Once that's done, you can either re-install PhatHack MM and pop a single playlist back on to the DMS... or use PhatNoise MM to do the same.
Try the DMS back in the box, and hopefully you get some sort of life out of it.

If there is a problem with the disc, this will likely show up when the DMS tools tries to re-format the partitions (you'll get an error).

If the tools doesn't repair the situation, and the disc is fine, then have a hunt on Ebay as there are usually plenty of GM media kits on there, which include an original DMS which you should have no problems using.

Failing that, once sbingner becomes more active if you're willing to send him your GM box perhaps he can verify and apply the hack for you - which might be of great use to help us understand more how the GM box works!  (This is only a suggestion, and of course you'll need to discuss it with him to ensure he is willing to do this)

Thanks for the tips. I've uninstalled Phathack MM. I've tried to run the DMS Tools mode but my DMS won't show up as a selection in the DMS device box. When I click the "refresh" button I can see that it is trying to read the DMS, green light on cradle will go on, but after a few seconds nothing. Which means I can't select the DMS Repair (full) tab. Is there a way to manually input where the DMS device is located? I can see the drives under "my computer" and if I click on the (E:) drive windows will ask me if I want to format the drive. Would that help?

Well, that log looks interesting!  It seems Windows isn't entirely convinced about the disk in your cradle as on occasions only one of the partitions shows up.

I'm just going to take some time out to marry this log with the code to see if I can determine why it won't show the disk in the dropdown......

Okay, I _think_ I might have found out what this issue is:

...is used to evaluate volume information given drive details - which makes the assumption that the drive letter has a valid volume associated with it.

I think in your case, whilst a drive letter may be valid, the volume isn't - and subsequent iteration of the drives checking the volume labels for PHTSYS and PHTDTA I suspect is generating an error, which  then marks the disk to NOT be added to the device list.

I need to run a couple of tests to re-create this issue, and I'll put a fix in for the next version and have you test it when I've got it done...

Thanks to your log, I've now managed to re-create and resolve this issue (at the expense of my 250GB drive - which wasn't being used anyway, so don't feel bad).

I've also spotted a similar issue, where it's possible to have partitions created with no drive letters that would suffer a similar fate so I'll be patching that up as well (as soon as the tools finish formatting this drive).

I'll let you have a link when I have a new installer ready via PM.
