DMS Patch Oddity?
« on: May 09, 2006, 11:52:52 pm »
I've run into a problem patching my PB in order to use a larger unsigned hard drive.  I followed all instructions in the wiki located here: http://wiki.phathack.com/Script_to_run_firmware_patch.

Everything seems to go fine until I have to insert the DMS Cart into my PB (which is originally an Audi PB modified to be operated by a Sony HU).  I select playlist 1 which it loads fine, then after a couple seconds the playlists shuffle onscreen rapidly and another second later playlist 2 starts playing.  Here is where it's recommended to pause playback to speed up CPU operations, but there is no pause button on my deck so I let it play for quite a few minutes, then power off and check for the bootload.log file... which is never generated?!

The only two log files on the drive are Patch.log and Phatpatch.log.  There seems to be a couple errors going on, but after searching I've come up empty and I'm at a loss.

Here's a copy of the contents of the log files:

Quote
patch.log
backing up drive signature
2048+0 records in
2048+0 records out
backup drive sig complete
starting patch
/dos/backup/patch.sh: 8: Syntax error: Bad fd number

Quote
phatpatch.log
PhatPatch v0.2 -bushing
first 2 words of flash=c102 0025
writing auto-id command (AA, 55, 90)
Flash chip reports manufacturer id=0001, device id=22bf
Resetting flash.
Testing patch locations:
Patch 1 @ 0bb8: make drive signature check always succeed: [bne verify_sig_failed -> bne PC+1]
Expected: 0033 1a00    Actual: 0000 1a00
Mismatch!
Verifying:
Patch 1 @ 0bb8: make drive signature check always succeed: [bne verify_sig_failed -> bne PC+1]
Expected: 0000 1a00    Actual: 0000 1a00
Verified!

Hopefully someone can point out what is going on here.

Well that's funny, I wonder why there wasn't a bootload.log file generated?  Do you think it's safe to go ahead with the upgrade and attempt to use my new unsigned drive?

I went ahead with the installation and drive swap and everything went perfectly smooth, I now have a functional 120 GB DMS.  I did have to shave a bit of the rubber gasket that fits around the drive, but it only took me a few minutes and was an easy fix.

Also, compared to the photos in the description for disassembly of the DMS cart, it looks like Phatnoise has recently added some snap on clips that hold the DMS cart together even after the screws are removed, and it wasn't nearly as easy to get apart as described in the Wiki, but once I understood how they were fastened it was a cinch.

Anyways, thanks for the help, much appreciated.
