PhatBox Hacking / DMS SSD Solution

The hard drive in my DMS was starting to show signs of failure and due for a replacement so I started looking at options that don't involve a mechanical drive (when it gets really cold in the northeast they don't like to move, plus bouncing on dirt roads probably is not good for durability).  That pretty much leaves SSD drives which traditionally have not played well with the Phatbox plus IDE SSDs seem scarce nowadays.  My last drive was 320 GB and getting full so capacity was a consideration.

I ended up trying a Samsung 860 EVO mSATA 500GB drive in an "AbleConn IIDE-MSAT mSATA SSD to 2.5-Inch IDE Adapter Converter" which adapts the mSATA drive to IDE.  Guess what?  It works!  Phatbox can make use of the whole capacity of the drive.  I'm guessing this may also work with other mSATA drives but don't have the need to try right now.  It'll be good the hear if anyone else does try with other drives.  The only visible weak point in the system is that the drive is secured by a wire latch so we'll see how the holds up over time.

Only thing left to do is remember how I got PHMM to generate track titles from FLAC files like I did before...

So I installed on a different machine with a different version of Windows and that seems to work now.  Funny since it worked previously on my other machine a couple of years ago.

Interesting, perhaps something on the old machine hijacking URLs but not getting a good response ...?  Who knows!  At least it is working now!

I just checked, and it seems to be populating for me.

The tools actually attempts to load using 2 URLs:

http://www.dailyphat.com/firmware/am.xml
http://downloads.phathack.com/firmware/am.xml

I've tried it a few times including reinstalling the hack tools but still run into the same issue with no firmware in the dropdown.  Is there a way to check if there's communication with the server on this end?

If there's nothing listed in the drop down, then there's a problem with the communication to the server to get the list.  As you'll note from some of the replies above, try it again and it should work.

I may have to do a one-off special version which bundles everything in one package to avoid this issue in the future!

Let me know if it's still not working.

I am trying to build a new DMS as the old hard drive was failing and noticed that there is no longer firmware listed in the drop down menu.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what's happend to the PhatHackMM site!  I'll try and get it fixed.  The download is still available though should anyone need it.

There isn't a lot of activity on this forum. I've run across my old DMS and Cradle. If there is a market for them I'll figure out what makes sense for a price. It'd be nice to see them used somewhere. Email me directly or respond to this message.

I'm digging around here as I've aquired a Phatbox VAE-012PBOX and cable, with no DMS. just purchased a DMS from eBay and waiting for that to arrive, although don't have a cradle. (Looks like you can get away with a USB adapter - he said hopefully). Anyway I downloaded a copy of PhatNoise MM that should hopefully get me sorted. Just need to find out how I set the DMS up - or even configure a larger new 160Gb disk to work in the Phatbox.
If you still need PhatNoise MM, let me know and I'll ping it to you - it seems to work OK with Windows 10. Or if you managed to get everything working I'd like to pick your brains.
