VW phatbox with a Kenwood HU problems

Have a VW phatbox and a kenwood unit and the correct cable to connect them.  I updated the firmware to kenwood 13.01 and when I try to install it in the car I get the box to light up red first for about 2 sec and then the red and green for about 3 seconds and then the green goes out and red stays on for about more 6 secs.  Then they both flash and go out.  The HU sees that the cable is hooked up and changer controls on the screen but nothing after that.  Tried to power up many times and disconnecting cable and plugging back in --- nothing.  Can anyone help!!!  The kenwood unit is a kdc-mp635 and it think it is a 07 model and not a 08.
